The temp of the Bilstein isn't all that critical as it's gas is seperated from the oil completely - thats where it's major advantage is, so you can work them really hard and so run them hot and they will still perform. I used a pair of guards per shock from Sydney Shocks. Thes shocks have been everywhere now and been 100% abused and are still sweet.
How come your shocks still have their paint after the Hay River trip? My Konis lost most of their paint on the lower half and got quite large dents, including right down near the lower mounts.
