I looked into it when I was offered an unlimited supply of SVO (Straight Vege Oil). However for SVO to match the lubricosity of Diesel it must be heated to 180degC. Coolant run heat exchangers would only reach about 80degC on a Tdi.
Apparently SVO is fine on older Mercs and old technology stuff, but not recommended for high speed turbo diesels.
At this stage I'm not prepared to risk early fuel pump failure for a short term monetary gain. But there's more to learn about the subject than I know, so I'm happy to be corrected.
