Axles wearing? Do these pictures mean anything to anyone?

Chasing down The rear clunk in my 110. (clunks when you release the clutch when changing gears first through to third.)

I had a look at the A frame bushes and they all look solid.

I took the rear wheels off to expose the ends of the axles.

Right hand side (Axle with no grease) was pushed out about one centimeter, but could be pushed in with ease.

Left hand side was fully pushed in, and covered with grease.

Both axles appear to have the same amount of play in them. (About one millimeter measured with my eyes:P)

What is the thing with the red arrow on it called. If anything, it looks like these have play in them.

Drive flange. But if you have clunking it's not likely to be these. By the way, clean and grease them. Or convert to oil filled.

Clunking is going to be something in the transfercase, diffs or drive shaft slip joints and unis. Or, more likely, it's a combination of all the play in all of these.

Your photos show why so many of us convert from greased to oiled wheel bearings. The drive splines are clearly contaminated and worn and would be contributing significantly to your 'clunking'.

You will need to replace both your axles and drive flanges and also convert your bearings to oil fed instead of greased. There are numerous posts on the forum detailing this conversion.
If attended to soon, you should be able to salvage your bearings before they will also need replacing.

Is this a job a workshop could do in one day?

It shouldn't be more than 1-2 hrs labour per side. VERY easy job. Just a little bit of dismantling, removal of 1 oil seal, and refit.

You could even clean and reuse your flanges and axles (for a while). They don't look too bad. But replace them if you are planning on going anywhere remote.

    hey aaron

my drive flanges and axles were worn way more than yours..... i upgraded to maxi at the same time

best way is to remove the five bolts holding the drive flanges on and remove the axles, give them a good clean so you can have a better look.....the axles don't look too worn and there only appears to be a small amount of wear in the flanges, this is something you should be able to do

i have never seen that coloured grease before

it is a good idea to convert to oil lubed

its not that hard of a job to do yourself but a workshop would easily knock it over in one day......i would suggest a landy repairer (not a dealer)

what suburb do you live in? i could drop around and have a look

    Im in Morayfield.

Im off to MR in an hour or soto get a new steering stableiser. Ill have a chat while Im there.

To my untrained eye, It looks like its the drive flanges that are worn. Can these just be replaced to gain me 20k before I have to do more major work. Alternatively, would I be able to get 10k out of them like this so I can get them done at the 100k service which Ill get MR to do?
