    4BD1 oil pressure

    • Q1. Can anynoe tell me the normal running oil pressure and temperature of a 4BD1 (1986 Defender) as part of my dash redevelopment (just another bit of project scope creep) I have an electronic oil pressure gauge (and maybe temperature).
    • Q2. The other issue I have is that there's very little room to fit the senders which will have to be joined via a brass union or something - but not enough room. So if I fitted a pressure pipe and located the senders remotely (say 300 mm away) would this work or would I just end up with an air lock in the tube and no real pressure at the senders.

    1. The manual I have is a little cryptic, but seems to suggest 99psi at the pump, 64psi at the oil cooler input and 42psi at the oil gallery, so at least these give the sort of range to expect. I talked to an owner with a gauge fitted yesterday who said he had 60psi in all conditions.

    2. If you apply pressure to one end of a pipe, and there is nowhere for the oil to go except the sender, in other words, no flow, then the pressure at the sender end of the pipe will be the same as at the engine end. If there is air in the pipe, it will just give a short delay in reaction of the gauge, and this will only be long enough to notice if the pipe is very restricted.

the place where the oil sender taps in for the idiot light should show about 60 psi and where the reversing light oil pressure sender taps in about 50.

when you said temp did you mean oil temp or coolant.?

I'll work around the 60psi mark as I'm taking it from the idiot lightport. When I said temp I meant the oil temp at normal runnung. The port is so restricted I can't even fit the pressure sender which is about 5 - 10 mm bigger than the idiot light sender.

Thanks team you make things just that bit easier.

youd be better off putting the oil temp sender into the reversing light oil pressure spot, theres more room there for a tpiece and a second sender, or you could just do away with the original sensor and hardwire the 2 wires together so that the reverse lights only come on in reverse instead of when your in reverse and the engine running.

Dave, have you any idea why this is set up so the reversing light only comes on when the engine is running? Only thing I can think of is that there is no AUX position on the ignition switch, so if you are just sitting there listening to the radio, the reversing light can't be on.

Dave - the gearbox is an LT85 and the switch is mechanical if you look at the switch there's a depressable ball that is activated mechanically although it will only work with ignition on.

if you follow all of the wiring in standard setup the reverse lights are also wired to a second pressure switch on the right hand side rear of the block, If you dont have the sender fitted then it should have a blanking plug screwed into the hole in which case thats where you plug the sender in. all of the 4Bd1's have it in the block as not all 4Bd1's have the same filtration setup like the AUS version so dont have the pressure tap on the filter housing.

You've got it John. No accessory position on the ignition switch as diesels don't have an ignition coil to burn out by leaving the ignition on, so need for an accessory position. However if you are in the habit of parking in reverse gear you could flatten the battery hence wiring through an oil pressure switch.

Thats as good a guess as I can come up with. and the diesels IGNs do have an AUx position it just not detented like a petrol engine, its the position that keys your glow plugs on an old school diesel.
