It was just a thought. It isn't using oil, runs very well and I had the cooling system overhauled last week with a pressure test and tested the cooling for exhaust gas but it came up nil so my anal start-up drill and servicing are paying off. Pat

What is your start-up drill and servicing regime? I think I should adopt it! I have two TD5's that use no oil, and I would like to keep it that way.

It may be a bit late for me with the 300tdi - since the D-gas was fitted, it is using a litre of oil every 2,000 k's, and is still doing so without the gas. I hope this doesn't mean a broken top ring or something.

What would you all consider is normal oil consumption for a 300tdi, driven hard considering that all up weight is 3.7 tons and the aerodynamics of the camper are .....er..... not very good? I cruise at 100KPH.

    Cheers,

    Paul

Mate I always and I mean always let the motor idle for a good minute every cold start-up,I don't load it until the oil is were it needs to be and as far as servicing too much is not enough. Pat

Wow Pat, Wish you hadn't said that. I always drive instantly from cold (taking it easily of course) because someone once told me never to idle a cold diesel engine.

How often do you change your oils and filters, and what oil do you use? I once nearly bought a 300tdi with 975,000 k's on the clock. The owner changed oils every 5,000 k's which seemed over the top, but maybe not. It was still on the original rings and crank bearings.

    Cheers,

    Paul

You don't idle a diesel for no reason,on start-up all engines need to be idled because the oil is in the sump, after it's warm turn it off as it will carbon up as the combustion temp goes down and it isn't hot enough to burn all the fuel.I,and this is my opinion think changing oil in LR T/D's every 5k is a waste of good oil, clean oil won't stop wear at start-up,thats were the wear occurs and thats why I idle every cold start. My site trucks,Bell 25T have a merc T/D that have throttle lock out if the oil is under 30 degree's so you can't rev the engine until the oil is warm. They are also the only machines with 500HR oil changes, that is unheard off in CAT,Komatsu etc but I'm not going to argue, they designed and built them. Great Pat,

Thanks for the info. I will make sure I get a bit of temperature up before moving off in future.

    Cheers,

    Hi Pat,

I'm wondering if you have an update on the d/gas system?

Fuel consumption, problems, no problems, etc?

Also, where did you get the system installed?

Mate I have had no drama's at all,my Tdi seems to like it,I have changed jets from .040 to .030 and the smaller jet doesn't seem to make much difference so I will be refitting the larger one.The horsepower gain I can't feel but the torque is alot better and very noticeable at lower rev's such as third. My defender will now get better than 750k's out of a tank of diesel were's before 650 was the norm,I have bigger 33'' tyres fitted which doesn't help economy. My vehicle is old but I service it correctly so mechanically it is very heathy and it doesn't have overheating issues or head drama's that seem to be common on this forum but I have just got a EGT gauge so I won't play with the tune untill that is fitted.I have just got out of the hospital so I haven't driven it for a week. 77 hp works out to 57.41kw
that's a good figure. redback's quote from diesel-gas looks a bit optomistic for a 300tdi. when we had our technical dyno day at graeme coopers, the 300tdi with diesel gas came to 52.3 kw at the wheels.
*this vehicle has no other mods to the engine*
