    Getrag 5 Speed

Has anyone heard of an adaptor to go between the Getrag 5 speed gearbox as fitted to VT 5 litre Commodores and the Land Rover LT230 Transfer Case?

If I fit an EFI 304 to the Rangie when I get home I wouldn't use an LR gearbox as I don't think they are strong enough.

And why would you want to use a getrag gearbox anyway , why do you think holden stopped using them , They did start using them in the VS to the VT it was,nt for long at all
Id recomend any other gearbox than the getrag

I have never heard of a failure in one of those boxes. Holden stopped using them when they changed to the US sourced Gen III engine.

I would use one because they bolt up to the engine without any adaptors and I think they are quite a short box. I know the T5 is very long and quite weak. The T56 is very very long, so that wouldn't fit, even though they are strong.

Going automatic is not an option, I would rather drive a Landcruiser or Patrol.

Holden stopped using them because of cost.Thats is why they stop using most good parts and why there cars have got worse over the years. They stopped sourcing cars from europe and rebaged Daewo's instead for the same reason.Getrag are a very well designed and built gearbox. Pat

The Getrag was marginal on the Commodore 5 Litre and they did have a lot of failures. I modified one to go on the back of my jag V12 - the V12 has more power than the V8 and about the same torque but the V12 delivers its power in a much smoother manner. The box works OK but has never had any hard use.

The Getrag was really best with the V6 and was only stopgap for the V8 until a better box became available - the previous T5 (?) was a bit rough and had a weak 5th gear that often failed. The getrag was only a little bit more reliable.

I would have some concerns using the Getrag behind a V8 in a low range, high torgue situation - at best the gearbox would be marginal.

Google the getrag and a number of issues do pop up.

Dont know if it would adapt but a box from a TD42 or TB42 Pootrol with the UD truck upgrade bits = virtually bombproof.

Not for holden TRW.We designed the IRS back in the VT days. Both holden and ford have had failures with the higher performance vehicles simply because some are bought by older people who cruise around and some are bought by people who flog them off every set of lights. The BW might be a bit stronger,I don't know but that doesn't mean the getrag is a POS.
