    Vacum pump

The vacum pump on the front of the alternator appears to have an oil leak
I read earlyer that the O ring can fail
has any one done this fix on the vacum pump or do I need to purchase a new one

Pull it out, drill the rivets out, and you will see if you can get away with a new (home-made) gasket, or if there is something more serious. In my case, there were bits of metal, the bore was scored, and the piston skirt had a tear. I ordered a new pump (from the UK), and put in a replacement gasket while I waited for new pump. It worked perfectly until I replaced it, and I noticed no real difference with the new one.

Edit: here's the link if you need to order one - http://www.paddockspares.com/pp/DISC..._-_300TDI.html

Damien, He can't be talking about a 300 Tdi as they don't have the vacuum pump on the alternator.
