Wondering if someone could help
Have a good friend across the road who is quite adventurous in fixing up rides ... The conversions that he has produced are quite amazing
The current project is a
Commodore VN 5ltr V8 auto
He installed a ... Crane Cam "CCH286" and found out the hard way that it requires a Chip to run it
The rest of the motor is bog standard with Dual Exhaust
Can anyone help or advise with either a chip or a suitable ECU to run it
Thanking you in advance
Mike

For best results get a custom chip written by someone who knows what they are doing.
My old WB ute had a red motor with late heads and manifolds. Made 185 kw at the rear wheels with a single exhaust.
Thanks Lucus ... Another place to try .. But I feel that they are gonna be exy
And this involves hugh $$$.... which he is trying to avoid
His motor needed a freshen up ...as the lifters & cam chain needed replacing .... So heh ....lets chuck in a bigger cam to give it some oomph
Cost him 200 odd dollars for the .... Crane Cam "CCH286"
The oversite of this "chip install with Dyno tune" is being quoted as ... $990
I have found a seller on Ebay with a chip... to help make a good choice ... Can anyone advise on the below
The word "Memcal" .... Is this what they call the dunnydore ECU??
The Crane Cam "CCH286" .... Is this a "mild cam" or "half cam" ??
The Crane Cam "CCH286" .... is it a "Stage 1" ... "Stage 2" ... "Stage 3" ??

Teh memcal is the style of chip used in the early ecu's. Chiptorque where the pioneers in cracking these ECU's for tuning.
I gotta wonder how you nieghbour stumbled into a cam change with out thinking about the engine managment side of things?![]()
The memcal is the part inside the ECU which basically stores the settings for the engine. On the cover of the ECU you'll find one end which can be removed by undoing two screws, under that is a blue part clipped into the circuit board, that's the memcal. Disconnect the battery before you do!
Also once you disconnect the battery or ECU on these, when you restart bring the rev's slowly past 2,000, the rev's will drop then go back up, this is the unit "learning" the fuel/idle/etc setting.
He got the cam from a "General Auto parts store" ... They didn't know about a chip being required.... Didn't cross our mind, as he didn't think it was a dramatic change (it is obviously, now, that it is!!!
)
... Figured that the motor would easily compensate for the cam via the O2 sensor
The chip can be bought in Perth .... but is worth "3 times the price" of the cam ... and then it is $$$ for +fit + Dyno
Big thanks for the above ....
Any Ideas or comment on the .... what is a "Stage 1 / 2 / 3 "
The reaction from the motor in it's current state ... is the following
The Timing is all over the place .... swings from TDC to 20 degrees // Back to TDC constantly (hunting)
The fuel injectors are on max flow (flooding)

Silly mistake, if he's that tight to do it correctly, just refit a standard grind cam
The is no shortcuts with correct tuning![]()
Your a hard man sometimes Matt
Naa ... He's not being tight .... just looking for "options" on a unexpected 1k cost
It's just a work ute that gets him to work & back .... Just wants it to run OK.. not looking for Max output potential
Do you recon the 286 duration cam is a "stage 2"??
How's that puppy treating you?

Thanks
The best...I think only.... option is to find a tuner with a dyno, that's talented with Delco EFI and get them to tune it, it will take a matter of a few hours at usually around $110-$150/hr and will achieve the best result
Seems Lucus knows who's who over west
The doggy is well, following me around
