    Dual mass flywheel, pls explain

    Ok
    Can someone who has hands on experiance pls explain the differance between a standard and dual mass flywheel. No guesses pls.

    A standard flywheel is one solid piece of metal. The clutch plate (friction disc) has spring cushioning between the spline and the friction disc to absorb shock loading.

    A dual mass has two pieces of metal with spring cushioning between them to allow for rotational shock loads to be absorbed. The clutch plate has no springs.

    I take it that you don't understand my explanation? Things like this are a little hard to explain without pictures or parts to point at.

    Thanks Big john have to do a clutch change in my SSangyong 4x4 work ute and allegedly it has a dual mass flywheel in it. Also they say you cannot machine them. We'll see about that

    Yep what he said, they can be replaced with the standard version, but you will notice an audible change at idle in engine noise.

    If you do a lot of towing, a heavy duty clutch and single mass flywheel is recommended for strength and endurence.

    They said that about ECOTEC V6 flywheels too, but I am sure I have heard of them being machined.
