Dave, I would be interested to know who it is and what you think of their work. I'm sure my RRC needs a good tune before I start driving it daily.

I'd like to thank all involved for this discussion.
I've been thinking since my motor rebuild, I've been getting very good fuel consumption for a V8 4wd. Since following this thread I think I might have a carby/ tune problem also. I'll get someone with more nouse than me to look at them.
I'll ask in a new post for people's recommendations of a carby magician in western Vic.

    This is a great forum.

Have you got the mixture tool for the strombergs and a balancer, like an old crypton. Sounds like its just running lean. Is there any holes in the diaphragms and are there any wear marks on the seats?

this 28KM route for about 4

    And after a guestimation balance

This 200KM route For 24L of unleaded

Atm I havent gone to any great lengths to get them perfect and I havent pulled them apart. Its low on power but getting better the carbs are now within an inch of mercury as opposed to the 9 that I started out at but I suspect that its not pulling enough vacuum Im out of time to do any in depth diagnosis, the plug I pulled to check its mix looked good but Ive only had it running for about 600K while Ive been playing with it setting the timing, idle stops, linkages and choke stop.

If it wont idle without choke then isn't it just running lean. If you have the mixture tool then its just a mater of screwing them anti-clockwise to richen them, then re-topping the dash pots with oil and test until sweet.

yes, assuming everything else is ok.

sometimes it idles like a swiss watch other it struggles even with about 1/4 choke on.

Im thinking its a combination of junk fuel, a diaphragm leak and dodgy cables.

whoever did the last work on it got it to idle by winding up the idle on the drivers side carby removing the throttle arm linkage and winding in the choke stop on the passangers side carby.

I have noticed that the pickup and flat spots are starting to go away as I get fresher fuel into the tank

Thats amazing. I just bought a 110 which they had done the exact same thing. I screwed them back and it had no power, but it did idle. It would only go if I pulled the choke out. So I set about with leads, cap, rotor, coil, plugs, fuel filters, new diaphragms. All these thing made little improvements especially the coil which was getting very hot, but still wouldn't run under load without choke. When the choke was pulled correctly depending on revs and load it would go very well. So I got out the mixture tool and adjusted the mixture, better but still no go under load.

It was the simplest thing in the end. I noticed a split in the breather hose. Pulled them off and blew down them. Blocked. Test drive with clear Carb breathers and after a re-tune and its nicest running V8 I have ever driven.
