    The aforementioned Merc diesel (OM617) is a good engine in a Mercedes, not so in a Land Rover. It it a very short stroke engine for a diesel and is governed to 5,750 rpm. They revved as smoothly and had similar top-end performance to the petrol fours and sixes offered alongside the D.

    That's not to say it's a bad engine - it's just not suitable for a Land Rover. Much in the same way a 4BD1 wouldn't be in keeping with the characteristics that 70s and 80s Mercs were designed to have.

    This is a stroker kit not an overbore so it wont be any different to rebuilding a standard motor in terms of liners etc. Its based on the brazilian motor just for a standard 300tdi.

    If they are using the 2.8 crank, to get 2.8 litres you must use the 2.8 pistons = overbore

    The amount you have to bore (and I've looked at in the past, just can't recall ATM) I wasn't comfortable with.

    {edit}

    HS2.8 = 93mm nominal bore (stroke = 102.5mm)
    300Tdi = 90.47mm, maximum oversize IIRC = 0.5mm

    and REGARDLESS of that (even if it were NOT an overbore) there are still design issues with the 300tdi that dont make it reliable in a WORK vehicle when uping the power and not addressing them

    bugger!

    I hadnt looked into it but I was sure it was just a stroker kit. I figured the re-bore was for the crank bearings. Yeah I would like to get some long term feed back on this conversion. The MD power upgrades seem to be more thorough than other guys in that they insist on head mods for cooling etc when upping the power, most others just turn on the fuel. They also dont seem to promise as big a gains either so it is possible that they have done their due diligence on this. I hope so as its a better way to get more power than just pumping more fuel into it. Im guessing that as more 300tdis fall victim to age and get rebuilt that we see a few of these out there.

    Personally it would be my ultimate motor if it's any good.
    Basically everything would be as per standard but with usable extra power.

    If I still have my Tdi when it dies I'm going to whatever pistons fit after the bores are cleaned up and then a ported head,better turbo and intercooler and exhaust,with a good tune up it'll give me all the performance I need.At the end of the day what you want it for and how much you want to spent will determine which way you should go. Just to put it out there. What would the engine capacity be if you only used the stroker crank and kept everything else stock????

    If it was possible to do it you might need different connecting rods as well I suspect. By my calcs using the figures posted above the 2.8 is 2785cc and the 300 Tdi pistons would provide 2635cc (2665cc if max oversize).

    Deejay hope this link works, I went down similar discussions to what your considering. I decided to go with the isuzu in my 130 as it best suited my needs of a vehicle able to pull a load daily and at times over distances. Your needs may differ so have a read, lots of opinions and some banter it covers the 2.5, 2.8 and 4BD1 (T). Hope this helps if you have any queries PM me.
    Kindest regards Garry
