    Diesel fuel leak!!

    G'day All,
As some of you may know that I have just got my 110 back after a catastrophic engine failure, I picked it up last Friday after it having a problem with ?? a air leak into the system, a few items were replaced and the washers under the lift pump (where that little inline filter is), anyway I drove it 87k's home but I did think that I noticed it ?? missed ?? when under load in 3rd gear, but just put it down to being very anxious and getting used to all the usual noises that one encounters in a Isuzu 110.
Anyway I was far too busy with other things and things on my mind to drive it anywhere yesterday (Saturday) and we had a swap meet here in town and the place gets grid locked, I had trouble getting home from it.
This morning Sunday I decided after I had attended to my daily chores feeding the 'Poodle Patrol' and swmbo's Bantams, put the sprinkler system on the gardens for a period, I climbed into the 110, glowed it for 10 seconds (not that it needed it) and it burst into life, I depressed the clutch engaged reverse gear, only to hear the engine running rough and struggling and sure enough a quick increase in engine revs and it died
S**t I thought, knowing full well that it has air in the system, well I know you cannot restart a diesel with air in system, but I cranked it over and lo n behold it did run albeit roughly, after 2 episodes of cranking it ran smoothly, I took it for a spin out through town to Mt. View and around the Pokolbin vineyards, it pulls like a mail train.
When I got home I parked it out on the street, collected a elevated platform aka milk crate as I'm vertically challenged, I started the engine and let it idle for a minute or so, it didn't take me anymore than 3 seconds to see it has a leak, the webs and top of the front differential were wet with fuel, and I spied a drip from this

securing/anti-vibration clamp, in this pic you can see the diesel fuel on the webs of the differential

and here it is with a drop of fuel on the underside

now I'm reasonably certain that the leak is coming from the pipe that rises vertically, not the one onto the bottom of the lift pump.
I guess that 28 years of vibration and crud that may have accumulated under the clamp has worn and formed a leak, either that or it's been damaged when lifting the engine out??, my question is how can I fix this, I'm unable to bend too much ATM (surgery last Monday) can the pipes be purchased?? any help apprecciated, cheeers Dennis

Can't help ree the pipe, good pick up by the way.

As a tempory solution you could get longer fuel hoses and slide the hose past the wear mark and clamp it off.
I'd also fit a clamp at the usual spot too.
Looking at the pictures if you did this to both pipes and fitted a longer bolt to the clamp you could leave it for years

You could also cut the pipe and bypass the bad bit but a lot more work.
    Cheers, Kyle

    G'day Dennis,
Are you sure it is leaking from the anti vibration clamp. I have never heard of one leaking there. I would be looking up higher where the nut is (maybe not tightened properly or old copper washers used when reinstalled) or maybe it is from the pipe clamp. I know it will be hard for you to get under it and have a good look with a torch and a dry rag but maybe you can con someone else to do it for you. I reckon you will find the leak is from one of these two. The pipes are available new but it would be cheaper to braze yours if that is where it is leaking.
    Cheers......Brian

I removed the clamp and disposed of it yes the isuzu does vibrate alot but to be quite honest I can't see that little stupid clamp doing much I've had no problems as of yet...only problem I've had is rough running on start up and no low down power off standstill due to what I believe a lack of fuel either that little filter is blocked or I hav a brokenn spring in the pump can you by any chance take a quick shot of what banjo the filter is in I havn't had time to look and a snap shot will take a few seconds off the maintenance time haha

    Found it!!!!

    G'day All,
First let me say Thank you to Bearman for his PM, I will keep that up my sleeve at this point in time, as this engine could still be where I saw it 2 years ago,

I found the leak, and caused myself some discomfort to boot , but the leak I'm 99.99999999% is coming from where the vertical rise meets at this union

the higher the engine rev's the more diesel fuel leaks out and runs down the pipe to saturate the rubber inside the vibration clamp and from there it drips onto the front differential and as you drive along it splashes onto the chassis and coats everything in diesel .
I managed to get a picture whilst on my back for you Matt, here is this lovely piece of work, I have had to take out the filter on the side of the road at the foot of the Liverpool Ranges long before it was a 2 lane affair, it is no fun I can assure you, although I have never had to do it since, anyway the picture of the 'Banjo' as you can see it sits directly over the engine mount cradle, if you FAT fingers well your *****d, LOL

anyway it's getting dark outside at 1715hrs so play is over for the day for me at least, cheers Dennis

Dennis, It looks like someone has added steel washers on those unions (the shiny washers). This is probably where it is leaking. It needs copper washers to compress and seal properly.

G'day All, I did nip it up with a 15/16"AF open ended spanner, the ? acorn nut turned approx 5-10 degrees (360deg being full circle) but it still leaked, tomorrow after Dr's appt I will clean it with 'BrakeKleen' and hose it off, then look for the source again with a stronger light, cheers Dennis

Thanks dennis much appreciated and very helpful also loving the photography its so clear the correct washer will make the difference as you would already know! I use copper but also have used copper with rubber inner ring that the diesel services use.. they seal very well.

During the rebuild wouldn't you need to anneal or get new washers for all the banjo fittings?
