Thread: Starting?

Yep common problem (well at least for me it is ) I have a push button to start mine rather than turning the key so I just keep hitting the button making it do it's one click and eventually it starts...it has been like this for years and has not got worse so I left it I'm pretty sure it's just dirty contacts and by clicking it enough times it makes contact and starts...I couldn't be bothered fixing it as I have other problems in other sections of the vehicle...

Have a look here brian id give these guys a call and see if you can get a new solinoid of em

You can fold the crimps back to get them apart, desolder the contact and reinstall is the reverse.
But it's a PITA job. If you can buy a new solenoid, then do so.

Hi guys,

I have done some investigating and have found damage from too long a cycle time. The brushes have come off their respective soldered on parts and the contacts in the starter relay were badly burnt and may have been the cause of the sticking on for ages causing the damage. Shouldn't be too hard to repair .

Ok, the solenoid is fixed and works now buuut...... I 'wisely' put some grease on the jumpy-outy spline thing and now the clutch slips and it won't turn the cog, hense no engine starting happening.

So, I cleaned out the clutch thing with kero and metho to make sure there was no grease left but still no joy .

I wonder if ashdown sell the clutch bit?

We'll see tomorrow...

What clutch bit?

In my experience the root cause of starter problems is often excessive current draw due to low voltage at the starter resulting from voltage drop due to bad connections - in my case the connection between the engine and the chassis.

Same for me. My engine to chassis earth strap had broken on the inside and caused all sorts of problems. PO replaced starter and battery then gave up.

Everything looked fine until i look it off and properly inspected it..
