The shafts are 4340 and the flange 4140.The internal spline was cut with a slotting head
and rotary table on Bridgeport mill .Matt sugest little to be gained by heat treating unless
they were annealed prior to machining IMHO

FWIW My 4BD1T Defender conversion has now covered nearly 220000kms with a late suffix R380 behind it. 5 crossings of the Simpson in three years (the last August last year), and much other hard work. The gearbox continues to perform very well. The vehicle is almost always up on GVM limit.
To those who question the durability of the combination I think my vehicle speaks for itself

That's what it looks like from what I see of how the shifter was made.
This is the AM's pic showing the shift rails and shift blocks, note it is rotated so front is at bottom of pic and left side is at right of pic
In a MXA5 or 6:
the rail for 1 & R is leftmost and moved to rear for R, forward for 1st
the next rail to right is 2 (rearward) & 3 (forward)
the next rail to right is 4 (rearward) & 5 (forward)
the next rail to right is 6 (rearward) (MXA6 only)
You have to look carefully at the pics to see how moving the top of the gear shift to left, rotates the long shaft clockwise and will move the selector onto the shift block on the left side.

I love the simplicity and lack of moving parts in this shifter, but was looking at it last night trying to work out if there was a simple way to reverse the fore/aft direction to give:
R 2 4
1 3 5
Came to the conclusion that its not possible with the amount of brain cells I have available!
