    Alternator swap

I'm starting the process of changing the standard Stage 1 ISUZU 40A alternator (Nippon Denso 100210-1150) to the generic 70A alternator (LR170-401). The first stumbling block I've come against is the pulleys.

The only 70A alternator I could find comes with a dual 10mm belt pulley. It's 82mm diameter on a 17mm shaft - see below

The original 40A alternator has a single 16mm belt, 90mm diameter, 15mm shaft (I think - I haven't got the pulley off yet)

I'm pretty sure the shafts are different so I can't simply swap the 40A pulley onto the 70A alternator and I can't find any replacement on the net. So for those of you who have done this conversion, what did you do for the pulley swap?

    Cheers
    Pete

I.. didn't? I just used the the new pulley on the new alt. It works fine and makes a good output with the RPM.

EDIT: the belt width was a pretty good match, but my original belt looked thinner than yours IIRC. I can go a measure if it is important.

With the 110 are you already using two belts? If you're using power steering and an A/C then your setup is probably different from the Stage 1 that doesn't have these creature comforts.
(who was it said "real men don't have power steering" )
So you may be running 10mm belts which, as you say, will fit the new alternator nicely.

I've just got the single 16mm belt and there lies my problem. If worst comes to worst I may have to bore out the old 40A pulley to fit on the 17mm shaft of the new alternator, but I'd kind of like to keep the old alternator as a spare.

Yep, two belts with A/C and P/S. And little girly forearms to match

I"m sure that there are plenty of 15mm shaft pulleys that would match..

I wouldn't go assuming a 15mm shaft without removing the old pulley. I've seen plenty of shaft threads being smaller than the shaft diameter. 17mm is a very common shaft size in my experience.

The power steering pump on the Isuzu isn't belt driven, it's gear driven from the timing gears. Mine uses one belt for alt and water pump, second for aircon. If that helps I don't know!

I ran into the same problem. The twin belt pully was a strait shaft where the orginal was a tapered shaft. I bought a alloy pully and put a grubscrew and dimpled the shaft.
Im pretty sure it was a single belt with twin vee's not twin belts

The original alternator shaft is definitely different. From memory its keyed (and possibly tapered). Don't recall the shaft size.

I got one of the generic alternators, but have since changed my mind and bought a good quality 120A one that has the correct pulley, so didn't end up having to solve the problem.

My new alternator is meant for an N series Rodeo, so you might have some luck chasing a pulley from one at wreckers or local auto electrician.

This looks like the right sort of pulley so might be useful to narrow the search: Holden Rodeo Alternator 85-98 2.3 2.6 Petrol 4ze1 | eBay

Yes, Steve and Albert, you're quite right. The original is keyed and tapered...

And the cooling fan is screwed to the rear of the pulley.

Here's what they look like side-by-side with the difference in mounting foot that also needs to be tackled.

I was hoping that someone was going to point me to towards a $5 replacement pulley from the local hardware store but I had my suspicion it was going to be harder than that. I'll have a traul around a couple of auto-electricians and see if anything comes of that. There must be something that can modified to fit. If I come up with something I'll post the result.

    Thanks for the feedback guys!
