    OMD-115 = RX Super
    Castrol FMX = ??? What exactly ???

What's the general consensus among Perentie owners coz there's gonna be around 2500 more of them on the roads and some of those owners will be complete idiots like me?
    I understand how you feel.
My own research has led me to use Castrol VMX80 in the LT95 gearbox and a cheap 15/40 engine oil in the transfer. I dont think you'll find a 'general consensus', apart from 'dont use diff oil'.
I personally use Caltex Dello 400 in all my diesel engines because it has the right specs for all of them, but viscosity and grade is more important than brand IMHO.

You could ask Blknight.aus who has been maintaining the RAAF Perenties for some years.

Your statement above is interesting, the Castrol site includes RX Super and GTX diesel as some of the recommendations for the engine and notes that engine oil may be used in the LT95....... so I'm left wondering what you're basing your statement on ? ?
I have spent about 4-5 hours talking to Castrol, Penrite, Gulf Western, Western oil technical departments and Penrite are the only brand that makes an oil that meets the original specs for when the LT95 was made.
The additives that are in modern oils like friction modifiers etc were not in oils in the late 60's early 70's. I have also tried many different types of oil and have found HPR30 works the best.
Diesel oils have high detergent levels, even Castrol tech dept said not a good choice, even though its on their spec sheet! Detergents are detrimental to long synchro life as are friction modifiers!

Hopefully blcknight.aus will let us know what he uses.

I found some history of the LT95 at: Land Rover gearbox history

"This gearbox uses 20/50 engine oil for both the gearbox and transfer case. This is apparently because it has it's own oil pump lubing the gearbox. A common mistake leading to early demise is running 90wt."

My question is this: Does the Perentie 4x4 (with LT95) have its own oil pump lubing the gearbox?

If the answer is yes, then Landrover Daves suggestion would seem pretty solid for both the GB and TC. If the answer is no, then we're probably back to square one.

Yes, the LT95 in the Perenties has the integral oil pump.

Yes. All LT95 gearboxes have an oil pump.

As I have stated in the past, I would not use engine oil in one if I owned one. Modern gear oils such as Syntrans or even VMX80 have better performance.

The LT95 is very strong and will probably have a long life on any oil that is not too viscous, however they are expensive to rebuild and spares will only become harder to find in the future.

I am surprised how much store people put in what oils the military uses. Their descisions are made based on considerations like logistics and commonality, with choosing the optimum oil for the specific application a long way down on the list.

That statement adds another interesting dimension... So with a VMX80 or Syntrans would you also subscribe to Mark2's idea of using a 15/40 in the Transfer Case?

And if so, why would a 15/40 be optimal in a TC situation?

If the oil that came in my FFR's gearbox from auction is what the army use, it's rubbish!

I use RX Super in my fleet of two LT95a/4BD1 One Tens.

    Mark,

Your advise seems to be a common thread.
Do you use RX Super in the gear box and TC?
What engine oil do you use?

The reason I ask is I have a Perentie on the way.

    Thanks,

    Phil.

Yes I use RX Super in engine, gearbox and transfer of my Isuzu/LT95 equipped vehicles.

Might have to organise a camo convoy for all of us Perentie owners around Sydney!
