In theory, in theory mind you, wouldn't a turbocharged 2.5 putting out similar power to a 3.9 use a similar amount of air?
If anything I would have thought a turbocharged engine would need more. Ignore this if you have turbocharged 3.9 diesels putting out massive amounts of power.

I tend to agree with Jeff - the turbocharged 2.5 probably puts through as much if not more air than does the N/A 3.9. However, the N/A engine is probably more sensitive to a restricted intake than is the turbo - given a restricted intake (within reason) I expect with the turbo it will simply mean the wastegate will close a little and the turbo will make up for it. Of course, if the turbo has no spare capacity... but if that were the case, there would be no more power to be gained by "tweaking".
I am guessing that perceived lack of top end power from the fitting of a snorkel may be as much due to increased drag as to pressure drop, although this will have some effect.
A point I would make is that fitting the pipe to the snorkel in place of the dump valve does not seem to me to be a very good idea - for two reasons - firstly, the Donaldson system expels a large proportion of the dust it traps though this valve, and secondly, where the normal intake points at the element, the element is protected against damage from incoming objects (grit, water drops) travelling at high speed, where opposite the dump valve, the incoming air will be directed straight at the paper.

Surely if you just maintain or increase the same internal diameter of the pipework an exhaust or PVC snorkel will suffice, as long as all the joins are sealed properly and the ram or cap disperses any rain water anything else is just purely asthetics.
