Here are some pics of 6 speed Isuzu gearbox alongside an R380 for a 300Tdi.

The cable shifter is just sitting on the box for reference. The shifter mounts on top of the transmission tunnel and the cables are routed through grommets. Brackets (not shown) for gearbox end of cables are mounted with the bell housing bolts.

Edit: The Isuzu box is shorter overall because of the short bell housing. The thick aluminium plate on the rear of the box is the adapter for an Atlas t/case. Cover on left side is for a PTO. Sixth gear is in the extension housing.

How much was he towing ?

One of the local farriers tows a goose neck with his '03/'04 loaded with his Polo ponies, it's sporting a 3" pipe and tweaked pump and he hasn't had a problem (yet) either.

what ratio LT230/Atlas are you using with your gearbox? Bush is 6th gear an advantage?

I called a truck wrecker who indicated the box and transfer is one unit. Is your gear box from a special model NPR series?

    thanks

    I'm using the 1.003:1 with 3.54 diffs and 29" tyres. Gives ~2000rpm at 100km/h.
At that rpm I can still out accelerate your average family car.

Atlas t/cases are available as 2 speed or 4 speed. Mine is 2 speed. They are available with a number of optional low range ratios - mine is 5:1.

6th is useful as my diff ratio is lower geared than stock rover (5.01:1). In 6 high with 37" tyres 1800 rpm = 101 kph.

There were 4wd Isuzu trucks but I don't know much about the gearboxes and t/cases they used. I don't know what Isuzu my gearbox came from, I know it was behind a larger engine than the 4BD1T, as I had to change the bell housing.

In the process I have re-done the t/case adaptor to make it shorter.

I tried to use an LT230, but the case of the 6 speed gearbox is too wide and the front extension housing of the LT230 would interfere, unless the LT230 is moved back (but I didn't want that in a rangie - would be ok in a 110 or 130).

Thanks to the short bell housing, my Isuzu 6 speed is slightly shorter than an R380 from a 300Tdi. A 5 speed Isuzu box is shorter again (and not as fat), so the adaptor method shown by Dougal is a good approach.
Sorry to dredge this one up, but how far back would you have to move the LT230 John to clear the six speed ?

The front extension housing, which fouls the gearbox is about 170 mm long, so possibly a little less than that.

I was wanting to get the t/case and gearbox assembly as short as possible and was considering cutting a new spline inside the t/case input gear.

If I was to do this again with more than 100" wheelbase, I would shrink fit a flange over a spudshaft from a ZF auto and weld around the front edge (where the weld won't weaken the spudshaft. Bolt the flange to the driveshaft flange on the gearbox and fabricate/machine a spacer between the LT230 and gearbox.

It's been a while since I've seen the photos. But I think if you're willing to get creative it could be done without gaining much length.
The little things like replacing the hex bolts on the inside of the TC with flat head cap screws will get you another 8mm clearance.
