A question for you Isuzu guru's

I am thinking of making a hybrid.

I have a disco 94 V8i and am thinking of putting a series III or county tray back body on it. The engine is tired, it was from when I bought it unfortunately; now I have thought of the 4.6 landy motor or the Gen III 6lt holden but the more I think about it the more I like the idea of the isuzu.

Now for my question does anyone here know if the ZF gear box can handle the 3.9 or is there a better box out there? I am an amputee so I would prefer the auto but if a manual is the only go I would go down that track.

Also what are the engine options are we limited to the 4BDI or is there other options?

I would appreciate any feed back before I start pulling the old girl apart.

    Cheers Blythe

    Hi Blythe!

I have an adapter kit here for the ZF to Isuzu 4BD1, BUT, and here is the BUT, I took it out of my vehicle due to 3 trans failures caused I am certain by excessive torsional vibrations and the immense torque fairly tore off the lock up clutch liningTwice
The only way I would do this conversion again is to use a 4HP24EH from a p38a, and utilise a Compushift trans computer to make it shift gears etc at the right moments. The 4HP24 is a fair bit tougher and has a huge converter/ lock up clutch.

I would urge you to think of possibly using a TF727 or a C6 etc but they are only 3spd boxes, so gearing could be an issue unless you are running big tyres like 35"s

The other issue is you would be advised to do a body lift of at least 50mm, as the 4BD1 sits very high in the engine bay and the rocker cover will need to be removed from time to time...

Also, turboing it is a must. The torque gains are significant and make all the hills flat

Hey JC how are you big fella?

Thanks for the info yes I will be running 35's. In the NT you can (so long as it is passed by an engineer) build just about anything and register it as a 1 off manufacture 2 criterisa is cant be bigger than 5.7Lt and must have at least 50mm box chassis, so I am fine on both counts. The series II or county body will be put on where it fits, wheel articulation will be the key criteria so yes I imagine the body will have to fit a couple of inches higher than bolted straight to the chassis, this is also why I want a tray back as it will be easier to do the mods on.

The biggest thing about putting an oiler in is to make it as simple as possible i.e. no emc / computers at all if possible. If I had to go 3 speed can a turbo 400 be fitted behind it? they are virtually unbreakable.

This is not being built for speed rather 100kph to 110kph max

It's possible to fit the 4BD1T without a body lift, I have it in my rangie. It requires you to pack the front bottomout bumpers by about an inch, but with 35's you'll probably be past that anyway.

It may be possible to make a ZF last with a heavier flywheel fitted to the Isuzu. But I'd go for a stronger auto.
The yank 4 speed auto (can't recall codes right now) can bolt up with the addition of the Isuzudieselswapper adapter kit. I believe there are also kits to fit these autos to the LT230 transfer case. You might need to change driveshaft lengths but that's easy (just hard on the wallet).

Its still a crap way of doing it,

If fitting a LR cab, you won;t need a body lift anyhow

you could regut the zf with the zf 26 parts and then get the TC made up specially to deal with the bottom end of the suzi.

be a pricey way of doing it. An alison box out of a small auto truck would probabley be better suited but mating that to the lt230 could get interesting.
