Isuzu MSA Gearbox to LT230

Boy, I'm getting my threads mixed up now.

Under Isuzu Enthusiasts thread 'I found a donor truck' Eric 'The 109' brought some interesting news.

Outcast4x4 have produced a prototype shaft and housing to match the MSA to the LT230. I have spoken to Greg at Outcast, Brisbane ph 0424705300, and it sounds like he is willing to make small numbers, 4, 5, 6 etc, but really to drive the price down he needs 10 to 15 interested buyers. So it might be an idea to give him a call. He is also hoping to provide in his price the LT230 lever mechanism and the MSA cable mechanism.

The intention is to make both the shaft and housing out of billet chrome-moly steel. The prototype is currently in one of his vehicles with 35" tyres "...being thrashing to test it". Next week some time he will make up a couple of more shafts allowing him to swap out the 'thrashed" unit for examination for wear and fatigue etc. Not clear if this will also be a destructive test. Since Dougal has thrown out the figure of 2000Nm as a bench mark I advised Greg it might be advantageous marketing wise to come up with some (better) figures.

I might have it completely nuffed, but since that shaft is on the output of the gearbox, the shaft should end up with engine torque times gear ratio?
With 1st in a MSA5G of 5.788:1, 2000nm on the shaft is only 345Nm at the engine which would seem quite a low figure to be using.

Ancient Marina seems clear on his opinion. SteveG, in laymans terms are you agreeing with Ancient, are you saying 2000Nm is over stated or understated?

They found problems with another make of alloy torque tube under the extremes they run them at. They have specialised rig customers who want the MSA/LT230 in their truck - so Outcast want no translation of that failing of the casing to go onto the shaft - hence steel instead of aluminium. So if they're over engineering them for their purposes, but their pricing from what I gather is similar to Sheldons then why not?

A billet of steel usually refers to a solid block witch would be aprox 250x250x180 mm .Just glad I am not doing the machining

Dougal has often said that these engines are capable of ~600Nm with a stock pump. With a 5.788:1 first gear that makes around 3500Nm at the output shaft unless there's something I don't understand (highly likely :) )

Yes, he said solid - they take out the bare minimum for shaft clearance - minimum wall thickness will be about 80mm. Anyway, I'm going to be in touch with them again end of next week.

Well Dougal out with the calculator - is 3500 correct :) (other than simply multiplying 600 x 5.788)
