I am a mechanic in the army and I wouldn't hestitate at buying one.
ahah yes.. but.. we don't want them getting to expensive do we! I for one vote that we get the rumour mill going about how bad they are.

Like has been said on here, once you buy one of these cars, then unless your very lucky you have to start spending to get them just right.

Mine is a 1990 factory Isuzu County with under 300K Km's on the clock and 2 previous owners. She must have been one of the last County's sold in Aus, if not THE last.

Even though she's one of the newer Isuzu County's out there, in the last 2 years I've still spent over $13K on mine on parts (no labour charges), service items and accessories (I just totted up the receipts) That does not include the original purchase price of the car. True, you don't have to change as many things as I did, but I like my cars to drive just right and be very dependable. The good thing is once you've spent the cash, you know the car is good for another 20 years !!

Just to give you an idea of what might need replacing if you buy an older County, mine has had: Brand new LT85 solid case gearbox, Ashcroft recon transfer box, new clutch, pressure plate, release bearing, clutch slave cylinder, new prop uni's, new brakes (callipers, rotors, pads, rear wheel cylinders, rear shoes, booster, master cylinder), swivels fully re-built (new railko pins, railko bushes, taper bearings, seals), all new Timken wheel bearings and seals all round, new solid steering arms, new Lemforder balljoints, new steering drop arm balljoint, new uni on steering shaft, new springs, all suspension bushes replaced (mostly Poly), new anti-roll bar drop arms, new HD 'A frame' balljoint and A frame re-bushed, recored 4 core radiator, new radiator hoses, replacement exhaust, new battery, new dash surround, new seatbelts, + loads of other stuff that I can't recall off the top of my head.

I've also spent a few bob on genuine wolf rims and some BFG muddies.

As you'd expect with the Isuzu motor; apart from regular servicing (oil and filters, fuel filters and air filters) I've only had to spend about $100 on the engine itself That was a new thermostat and 'O' ring and a new pressure relief (overflow return) valve on top of the fuel filter housing. I also changed the radiator and hoses but that was more a preventative measure as the copper cooling fins had started to degrade on the old one and I had a big trip coming up.

As with most cars you spend a fortune, get them just right and then sell them!! I was NEVER going to sell this car, but we're heading back overseas, so a quick heads up for you guys on this sub-forum, keep your eyes on the markets section of this site in about 5 weeks time (mid April 2010).

Thanks Flagg and RAR 110 for that info

I am just about to get into my 86 Isuzu build up as an expedition/trip vehicle.

Just need to sell the 04 TD5 Disco first but that may be in progress

Currently assesing the overall budget and getting stuff priced up

Not really an option to do it myself as limted time and no workshop prevent this..

It's a really good base to start from as it has had a $ 2000 engine rebuild by the prev owner and a diesel gas injection system fitted and a rebuilt LT95 box. It goes like the powers now ( that is all relative of course) and the purchase included a loose Garrett Turbo that I would get fitted.

Dare I say it but if a good 99TD5 Fender came up I may consider selling the County

Apologies to all my Isuzu brothers

She's not for sale right now.

I'll be putting an ad up as soon as we get back from our trip to the south coast of WA, which is after our house sale is settled and the international removal people have been (in a fortnight).

If I don't get the asking price, then I'll leave her in the shed at the in-laws place and use her when we visit each year, but to be honest I'd rather see her go to a good home.

Given the stock IP can provide around double the stock power. What do you need gas for?
Is 600Nm not enough for your gearbox?
