    Legalities

Trailer modifications: am putting disco 2 wheels under 6-4, and need to replace ser3 wheels and hubs. Recieved advice from forum and need to clarify a few points recieved. On advice ordered commodore stud pattern hubs and pcd. Went to pick up same in Cairns and was advised if I drilled these standard hubs to suit 14mm studs would weaken hubs and susequent failure of hubs and damage to others would leave me leagally libel[as has happened to this seller in Cairns- he sold to a SOLICITOR who then sued]. I am now purchasing a toyota size hub[4wd] blank and getting it drilled to suit disco patten. I know this is a bit long winded BUT!!!!

    Hi Greg
Find a GOOD supplier.Yes standard holden hubs drilled out NOT GOOD.Mine were custom made Martins Trailer Parts WA,they send all over the country.Best if you can actually take the trailer in show them whats needed and get it built.Im sure AULROians can reccomend a local expert, quite a few of us have done similar.
Bear in mind,if you use heavy duty hubs like I did, alloy rims need machining to suit the hub.

There are others too, just look a bit further back in this area.

I used Marshall Engineering for my D2 hubs, they supplied them with 14mm studs. Great to deal with, know their product and great service. they will also ship country wide. just google "Marshall Engineering".

That's strange because my original hubs were standard Ford hubs with 12mm studs and 15in sunnies fitted on my camper trailer, it's rated to 1600kg and weighs 1300kg, when i changed to Disco wheels 2 1/2yrs ago, the trailer mob that did my hubs used standard 9" drum brake hubs drilled in 120 PCD too suit 14mm studs, not so called 4X4 hubs, also i'm still running the original Ford bearings.

Why would drilling them again weakin them, look at it this way, a Commodore weighs 1800kgs a 6x4 box trailer weighs a max of 750kg loaded.

To get around the problem ask for a blank hub drilled in 120 PCD WITH Landcruiser studs, they are M14 studs anyway.

The hubs with the holden pattern seemed quite small in diameter so that when redrilled to suit 14mm[5/16] studs had less clearance to the circumfrence of the hub. The 4wd hubs[ with the ford bearings mated to the 45mm square axle] being of greater diameter have heaps of meat from stud to outer edge of hub, it maybe a little overkill, as I have no intention of suing anyone, but for minimal extra cost I will feel just that bit safer when fully loaded and in the Cape with no spares for 100s km

P.S. thanks for all the info and comments!!

My hubs are 9" same size as Holden hubs with Ford bearings or LM/slimline bearings.

Same as these only with 14mm studs

    422210 9" x 1 3/4" Hub drum1450 kgLM/Slimline Commodore
    5 x 120mm PCD

These are 14mm 5 stud Land Cruiser hubs, see same diameter as mine only these have the Holden bearings so has less KG rating

    422212 9" x 1 3/4" Hub drum1200 kgSlimline 5 stud Land Cruiser
    5 x 150mm PCD

The main thing you need to worry about is making sure that it is a nice fit on the centre as that is what should be carrying the load and not the studs anyway.

If the commy hub isnt a neat fit and flogs around in the rim then you cant use it, or the other way around, too tight and needing to modify rims limits your options if you want to fit your cars spare to it or it's spare to your car as the same reason if you machine out the rims for the trailer then the studs on the car will be taking the load not the centre.

The PCD is the last thing you need to worry about, as long as there is meat to drill into then you can drill what ever you want into them.
