...no such thing as mandatory in friendship.
Ah, so a wave that offers hollow friendship, expects the same in return.
The Defender wave is certainly a complex and intriguing cultural phenomenon; the intuitive intricacies of which are perhaps more revealing of motive than at first glance.

Its actually fairly basic psychology, identifying as a group. Defender drivers aren't the only automotive group who wave at each other![]()
Don't worry, I won't try and be friendly to any more defender drivers from now on, I'll leave you to your non mandatory ritual

Just as well I'm moving back to a Disco Mr Muppet,,, I'm expecting you'll be waving at D4's
Supprisingly, the Disco's I wave to from my Defender seem rather intrigued when they see me do it,, although rarely do I get a return, and considering they seem to be looking hard at the car, you'd think they'd be ready for it,,, and don't get all that many return waves from Defender drivers here in Melb.![]()
Sometimes a wave is just a wave.![]()
I have driven defenders and series landrovers for more than 40 years and have always waved, maybe some sense of a common love/appreciation for them. In the early days I learnt to drive in a 1955 MGTF and then MGB's. The MG community in those days always waved (probably still does) or if you had a rare enough model would stop on the side of the road and have a chat.
I shall continue to wave and hope most of you do so too. The wave is usually accompanied by a BIG smile, and that is a great feeling as someone pointed out earlier in this thread :-)

Of course it's not mandatory but to suggest that we are all snobs because we expect a wave in return is a little hard to swallow. I am sure I have missed waves but not on purpose. I wave from the Disco all the time. I work in Paddington, in inner Brisbane, and I never get a wave in return from the Range Rover set. I don't care. If you don't want to wave to me in my nice comfy Disco with the great stereo and cold aircon which cost half as much as your Defender. It's free world. I won't take it personally.
