There were 3 Cruisers. So i'd say chin up, problems abound in every make, but none of them are as much fun to drive as a Defender..... and the true believers even wave at you to show how happy they are. They have been doing it for the 30 years I've had Landrovers, and i hope it keeps on going. Oh, and when she hit about 160000, it seemed to get a new lease on life and go even better. By the way, I've had the truck since it was 65000 km old and have never had any issues with the diffs. I don't know what it did before that, but they look original. I hope the problems people are having get sorted because the Defender's far too good to be angry at. Cheers
The frustrating thing being that there are obviously people out there with issues on their new cars, but so do every other brand and unless its a complete lemon you don't hear about it!

I work in civil engineering (road building) and we used to use Toyota almost exclusively and the tide is definitely shifting. The "bullet proof" (if you want to believe the hype) 70 Series LC is currently our worst performer. Everything you can possibly imagine has gone wrong with these things. Engines, gearboxes, electrics etc. In fact in the past 24 months they were the only vehicles to actually leave people completely stranded needing satellite phone calls for recovery. We just don't bother with Hiluxes anymore either. They ride on their "unbreakable" reputation fueled by the Top Gear special on the old beam axle model, which is certainly not the case anymore...

The trend looks to be towards "disposable" 4x4's that's affordable enough to basically write off after 2 years, so we are now driving base spec Rangers and Colorados. I do large amounts of black top between projects, so I get to drive one of the new "soft roader" Prados, but I certainly won't trust one of those on my own in the bush!

Let people then make up their minds that after 3 months of ownership that they've "made a mistake" buying a Defender as those people are not new and unique and they have for many years supplied the second hand market with nearly new Defenders for the real believers among us.

    Cheers,

    Lou

    mine a MY13,
    problems so far :
-turbo hose blew on highway, engine in limp mode.
-burned rear brake light bulb (they all do that unless you get LED
-two leaks just above those brake lights, where the panels joint
-lack of fuild in both front and rear dif
-the bolts on frond diff is loose

but somehow I lose interests in others 4wds (since I got the fender
the bond must be strong, I think, to make me laugh when I saw water leaking into the cabin and think "oh, so the rivets are real, they are not just decorations..."

Mine is a year old next week, with 51000km,
I had to replace the LHF park light globe.....
It has never been back to a dealer for a service, as I do all the work my self.

There are lemons in all makes and models of vehicles, but having dust come into the cabin is not necessarily a fault but a known issue that can be rectified, blowing up three engines in 50000km and a world wide recall...that would be a issue, sure the read diffs have backlash but so do the Army 110's, there were no recalls with them, perhaps there are many late drinkers buying the Defenders now days and because it makes more sounds than a Prado...there must be a fault?

Troubles? Yes we had a few? But Then again, too few to mention.... but i will for this thread
1/- poor fuel clogs the fuel filter regularly and quickly.
2/ Blew an air con hose- probably the single worst thing that can happen at this time of the year in that place. It didnt leak dust until then. leaked a bit after that though.
3/ the feed wire off the circuit breaker came loose cancelling out the lights and a few other things.
    4/....and that was it.
Given it was 3756 km up and about the same back which was all highway, it did 10500 km on constant really bad corrugations, washouts and dirt tracks with a 650 litre fuel tank and tools and guff on the back constantly returning an average of 10 km litre over all terrains. Not even a puncture which was excellent considering i had 8 ply Dunlop Road Grippers (Yes the Toyota tyres in 7.50 16's).
