I'm not at all sure that this is relevant or not but on a trip a couple of years ago a member had his front uni joint give way and he had to be recovered back to Perth for it to be fixed.
Apparently the condensate from the aircon drips down onto the joint and must have seeped in causing rust and the eventual breaking.
This was a regularly serviced vehicle by a well regarded workshop who would have greased said joint automatically as part of the service.
Is it possible this has happened to your vehicle?
    AlanH.
PS. I should have said the vehicle was a D2.

In a recent service, the mechanic noticed the Double Cardan front prop shaft that was installed when I lifted Monty a couple of years ago, has started to show signs of rust in areas where one should not be expecting to see rust.

It's only been two years since this was installed and I haven't driven the vehicle in salt water or on beaches at all. Each time I get Monty muddy, I clean him thoroughly with the pressure sprayer underneath so I'm curious as to why this is happening.

Several attempts to get in touch with the manufacturer (Bailey Morris) have failed; they simply will not respond to my enquiries.

Questions for those with experience and/ or wisdom in such matters:

    1. I recently had the flywheel machined and the clutch plate and slave cylinder replaced so the shaft would have been removed to do this and put back.....now I'm getting a vibration when driving, particularly at high speeds and when accelerating. Could the shaft be responsible or is it likely something else causing it?
    2. Assuming I need a replacement shaft, what are the recommended suppliers? I've heard good things about Tom Woods but am open to suggestions. Buggered if I'm getting anything else from Bailey Morris.
    3. Are these shafts simple to install oneself in the driveway?
    4. Do they need regular maintenance e.g. greasing?

As ever, I am very grateful for any help you can give me.

    Cheers
Get a Tom Woods, install it in your own driveway and grease every 5,000k.

    Job done.

I've had a second hand BM shaft in my car for over 60,000Km - serviced regularly. I did contact BM 're the "highway driving" issue and they stood by their product so I took the gamble. Can't complain sofar and it has been across the gun barrel and many km at hwy speeds and also regularly out with the mates on 4wd weekends. Just thought I would give my experience so far of the BM product.

Chook put me onto the chap who built his front prop for him from a LR 6x6, so while I'm waiting for a response, I might investigate the Tom Woods shafts.

Does one need to buy them direct from TW or is there a supplier in Australia that I should go to?

    Cheers

It's pretty easy to deal with Tom woods direct. I ordered one on a Thursday one week and it was on my door the Friday following. Measure your PCD so you get the right flange. Especially if they changed the TFC flange as part of the mod to the double cardan shaft. Relevant when the DC shaft was designed for the D2 fitted to the defender.

Bailey Morris doesn't have a greasable centre ball joint. Tom Woods does. All TW uses 1310 UJ's.

Hardy Spicer was more expensive than buying from TW incl postage and exchange rate.

I've got a Devon 4x4 DC shaft on my 90. It doesn't require the adapter thing on the transfer case and is a simple bolt in replacement to the original shaft. I ordered it on a Friday morning and it was delivered 4 days later to Perth. 30,000km later and still going strong.

    UPDATE

After an email discussion with Tom Wood, I was due to go home and take some measurements for him so he could be sure of what to quote for me...when I got a call from Jeep Konnection who said they have a DII DC shaft that will fit but I need to take the right measurements for the flange to make it fit.

Then I called Les Richmond Automotive to follow up on my email from yesterday and the bloke said they have a few PUMA DC shafts on the way from Tom Wood that they have had made to the right dimensions - so it should simply bolt in if I take the BM shaft out. The chap I spoke to there said they just ran out the other week so ordered more and they're en route now.

Thus, I've ordered one and it'll be at my door in 10 days or so. THANK YOU all for your help and for explaining things to me.

If the vibration gets any worse, I'll remove the shaft and lock the CD so I can still drive the car on rear wheel drive. Would it damage anything if I did that for say....400km of freeway driving?
    Bobby
