I drove around for 3 months without a front shaft. Probably not ideal but nothing has reared to suggest any damage. MLD

take you 10-15 mins to remove it and whatever time the business needs it for if you dont do it your self.

get new nuts and bolts when you reinstall it.
I have to also say that this wasn't my experience, either. The cheapest quote I found was actually slightly more expensive that buying a replacement one. I just overhauled it because I really like repairing, recycling and reusing things.

Might be more people doing it, therefore a better price due to competition, in different areas in Australia?

I'll have a really good look at the current one once I get it off the car and will see if I can do anything to salvage it; firstly on my own and then if I can't do it, having someone else do it. I like the idea of having a spare for the long trips.

The front shaft on the D2's are known to "squeak"

    Oh come on! really?

I knew a bloke who used to take spare axles etc as "spares" . he ended up destroying his suspension from overloading.

IMHO it is sufficient to inspect the UJs by grabbing and shaking and visually inspecting, or if you are anal like me maybe take off the driveshaft and inspect it in a vice, by rotating all the UJs and looking for hard spots or slackness. And of course grease em if they are greasable.

They don't go overnight, they can soldier on for years .

Every now and then on your trip and especially after water crossings give them another visual and grab test , and of course if you like water make sure they are greasable..

    Bit of an update....

I took Monty up to Luke at Goodspanner in Gosford so he could have a squiz at the winch, which isn't working. Click click no pull.

While he had the car I asked him to remove the front drive shaft as I've got a Tom Wood DC shaft on the way any day now.
I drove home (30 mins) under power from the rear only, with the centre diff lock engaged.

The vibration I was feeling with the old shaft when accelerating has gone, as has the odd ticking noise, so I'm a happy bunny.....but the clunking noise when I change gear is far worse....with the new clutch it had pretty much completely gone away but now it's very noisy and feels less 'tight', if that makes any sense.

Could it simply be that with no front drive shaft there's a lot less load and so it's all just a bit looser....and that when I put the new shaft in it should firm up again?

    Anyone experienced this before?

However when I needed the rear on the 110 the cheapest repair I could find around SEQ was 450 and no guarantee it want going to be more. Got a Spicer one delivered for $270.
Try Gibbs trucking - there's a bunch of them. Go to the Burleigh Depot and speak toJohn he's done my propshaft work, does all kinds of custom prop work and was cheap and also very good. I think I paid $80 for a full straightening and balancing/weighting etc. dropped it off and picked it up 3 hours later.

couldn't fault him. will be using him again.
