Just unbolt it and do some blacksmithing!

A little TLC for the almost 20 year old Td5 Defender ................

    - Engine oil & full flow filter change, I only replace the centrifuge filter every second or third oil change. I pulled one of these apart once and found very little build up so figured that I could extend their recommended change interval while still having it do what it's designed to do - I think the recommended service interval for the two filters is back to front, IMHO it should be FF filter every oil change and Centrifuge filter every second or third oil change.
    - Checked transmission fluids, greased drive shaft unis.
    - Replaced fuel & air filters
    - Replaced leaking clutch master cylinder but not slave cyl - discovered that the thread on the pipe inlet of Td5 slave is finer than the 110/Perentie slave. Slave cyl will be done when I exchange for correct unit!
    - Replaced leaking NS rear hub oil seal - a much cleaner/easier job when running oil fed bearings instead of greased bearings.
    - Replaced brake fluid & checked brake pad wear, all OK so new pads were returned to the cupboard until I've done another 10,000kms.

Looking forward to more trouble free motoring.
    Roger

Changed the oil in my Defender 90 TD5 yesterday for the first time since acquiring it. I didn’t change either of the oil filters as they had only done 3000 klicks since the last change but it still took half an hour.

The sump plug must have been done up by a gorilla, it was so tight! The ill-fitting aluminium sealing washer had been crushed to less than 1mm thick. Then I spent the next 10 minutes fishing out all the bits of Teflon plumber’s tape that had fused to the sump thread and sealing flange…ugh!! All this apparently was done by a mobile mechanic (not an LR indy) for the previous owner.
Soooo, sump plug back in with a new proper copper washer (CDU1001L), nipped up to just 23Nm (no gorilla needed), filled with Penrite HPR Diesel 5 5W-40, no leaks.
Same mobile mechanic changed the fuel filter using a Cooper filter and sure enough it was leaking. Ditched that and fitted a Coopers fuel filter, no leaks. It is amazing the difference an 's' can make.

I note that the mobile mechanic in question is no longer in business.

Will be interested to know how your LOF clutch goes... A good mate of mine had his LOF clutch on his 130 give up the ghost after only 9000kms. The Centre clutch plate failed and he never got a chance to take it offroad. I was hoping it might have been a one off but he decided not to claim another LOF clutch but instead went with the Exedy HD clutch... Not cheap either...

Fitted a leather steering wheel cover from Custom Steering. Pretty easy to fit provided you keep the thread on the inside of the wheel. I'd like to think I'm reasonably bright and could comply with this but apparently not!

I lost count of the number of times I went around the outside and had to unpick. DOH!

    Finished product.....luxury!!

Santa came early and dropped off some Supaflex radius arms for the Td5, gave them a quick blast with Raptor black to match the rest of underside. Passenger side fitted up this morning, drivers side may have to wait till boxing day as the rest of the day is cooking and prep for the standard xmas family lunch.

Can't wait to test the flex on the these.

Gave it a wash. Going for new radius arm bushes tomorrow.
    Cheers, Billy.
    Keeping it simple is complicated.
