Just carry the small, light adapter..... In vehicle, you still just use the USB cable to plug in in a lot of vehicles. Or those with an iPod plug just put the adapter in between as you connect. Or if you are all so opposed to modern changes can I suggest you insert your 8 track back in the dashI returned my iPhone 4S to cancel a Telstra contract and in the meantime have been using a 'droid phone whilst I waited for the iPhone 5 to arrive. All I can say - Thank goodness the iP5 is here - that 'droid POS was doing my damn head in!!!! Clunky, bug ridden, lagging, pile of rubbish! Even had a stint with a -yikes- Windows Phone... Smoother interface but not my cup of tea either... Everything in our lives / house is integrated. We have OS X computers, Apple TV units, iPhones, iPads etc... Everything works - everywhere. My workshop even has AppleTV

Yeah, Right!
An adapter cable is all well and good for the car and to use to odd, simple iPod/iPad/iPhone accessory but what if you have, like was mentioned way back, a hi-fi stereo interface where the i-device stands up happily in the adapter so you can read its display. This goes for other things as simple as extension speakers or even clock radios. Most of these ancillary devices have various base adapters already to ensure the device sits (or leans) at the correct angle to ensure good connection. None of these are designed or intended for an extra adapter instead of a device.
Your lightning adapter cable isn't worth a tinkers curse to solve that problem!! You need the genuine, solid, lightning to 30 pin adapter (currently valued at AUD35), and that leaves the iPhone hanging around in mid air. The added height, at best, is mechanically weak and unstable and, at worst, just may render the device unusable by it simply falling over.
Yes, I could get some convenience potentially by leaving this adapter plugged into the bottom of the phone under most circumstances, except when actually carrying the phone around.
Apple makes much truck about the simplicity, interchangeability and convenience of its devices. The need for this adapter widget just screws that up royally.
Them's my thoughts anyway, and why I won't be going down the iPhone 5 path (or its successor) for some time yet.
Cheers,
Iain
I have viven out 5 or 6 of them now at work, and a few users have specified Iphone4S's specifically because of the dock issue.
The thing i find curious is apple's insistance on a new non standard connector which potentially has some sort of chip in it so a cheapo chinese rip off cable has to be suitably enginieered to get around this extra money grabbing feature.
Also i am a bit curious as to why with them forcing you to spend $$ on new cables/cases etc, the phone itself still costs exactly the same as the 4S? I would have thought there would be a premium for it?
I feel apple has really missed the mark with their advertising campaign about thumbs and screen sizes. Why don't they just say it just works, as thats the best thing about the damn phone.

Thunderbolt isnt non std, it is the next gen std..
Like firewire and the now popular Express Card replacement for PCMCIA...
All done by Apple in early adoption.
As for the adapter.. Well...
I to, have a clock radio, amplifier, and multiple vehicles with iPod connectivity.
Heres the kicker - with a protective case so my work environment doesn't kill the phone in weeks it wont fit in any of the docks...
BUT... Using a iPod dock extender (30 pin to 30 pin) it will fit all devices.... and if you use a nano dock housing supports quite well...
The thunderbolt adapter is no different...
Damn.. People are so funny...
I purchased a new Amplifier to get HDMI 1.3 and iPod...
Then upgraded to another amp to get HDMI 1.4
Then upgraded the TV from a DVI model to HDMI..
And will get the new Pod dock when its released....
The iPhone 5 is brilliant, reliable and useful... Why wouldnt I adopt it...
DAMMIT.... Now I have to buy a new case![]()
haahaa to have such a customer base. Apple like everything to be proprietary - for their own financial gain. Its not progress. Apple has the most locked in tech out there, everything needs to run apple and connect to another apple device otherwise it will run like crap.
Thunderbolt will not make it off apple devices, same way firewire failed to make much impact outside the mac sphere. USB 2-3 , eSATA were always a step ahead.
Apple has done some great work to get people onto new tech but for the most part it is dumbed down techno glitter. If everything in your house is apple and you cant wait for the next apple gizmo then you have been consumed and are blinded by the white.
Compare all the Iphone releases to the competition at the time and the Iphone 5 is easily apples worst release in the series.
Hi speed firewire still slays the competition for reliability and throughput.
SCSI is also a performance std, but often only high end servers...
I'm a MCSE amongst other things and totally sick of fixing PC crap..
People forget, these devices are suppose to make life easier, not harder....
The amount of stuff I've had to learn to keep WinSlows systems in check is ridiculous. To learn Apple - I learned Unix....From books - as the system didnt need continuous upkeep.
Why is my house Apple? Because its reliable and it enhances my life not detracts from it with clunky behavior, poor performance or forbid... Needing continual hardware upgrades to match the latest hardware hungry offering from M$....
Lets not mention my "Ice Cream Sandwich" piece of **** Samsung which would be better served as a fishing lure......
I work on PCs a heck of a lot, and have lots of quirky behavior from them all the time - reboots required, driver updates, clunky behavior "Not responding" is the most common phrase from my Win7 work Laptop...
My first MBP is an original unit which only became obsolete last year.... Not bad for 8 years old.... And still outgunned my i5 PC on most tasks....
And before you point fingers at Apple - Thunderbolt was developed by INTEL.... Apple is an early adopter....
Sony Vaio Z units runs the original Optical version / hybrid with USB...
Dumb down Techno glitter.... Great line.... Pity its wrong... One of the most power OS, full product line integration, superior security, clean interfaces and machines - with less **** and glitter than most PCs...
Brand identification, useability, stability.
TCO for a Mac is so much cheaper than a PC - especially if you keep up with every OS update
My last 30 cars have been propriety too... No kit cars in my stable...
