Well, the starter motor is fried...
Hopefully a wrecker in the Perth area has a spare. At this point I'm debating if it's even worth the risk trying to make the trek to Cairns. The weather is certainly against me, the car isn't exactly instilling me with loads of confidence, and I'd spend as much in fuel getting there as I would taking the loss of selling it in WA.
The west coast and North were quite high on my bucket list to see here but I'm starting to think that might be best left to another future trip in a few years time. Maybe I'll knock off driving an XR6 Falcon and a Postie bike on that trip as I haven't managed to check those of on this trip.
Shop says starter. Contacts are burnt out and cleaning them up did no good. So they say the starter needs replaced.
Sorry, I should clarify. It's the starter solenoid contacts. And on my starter model (which i guess is tthe later one) the solenoid isn't serviceable apparently.
Being as how he's suggested I source a starter motor on my own as that would be cheaper than him getting one and up until now he's been very honest and good to work with (same guy/shop I took the car to to fix the earlier starting/ignition switch issue), I'd say isn't serviceable
He may be mistaken about it not being able to repaired, but I'm in slight agreement that it'd be wisest to get a whole replacement starter in case it's more than just the solenoid acting up. There was dirt and sand and crap in the starter when they pulled it apart.
On my 96 tdi, the starter solenoid was a sealed unit - as Barney says - unservicable.
