Gents, hoping someone here has done this mod: Defender Transfer Case into a '96 Disco Tdi300?

I created a post here: Who's Running a Defender Transfer Case in a Disco Tdi300?

Looking at ways to improve towing off the mark & general drivability and keep my 235/85/16 tyres as well.... Has anyone on here running a Defender Transfer Case?

    Rob

    Hi Rob
What kind of tune do you have on the injector pump?
    Standard intercooler?
    Std exhaust?
    Just curious.
I have a mine tweaked a bit with a bigger ( Jase's) intercooler and ditched the centre muffler.
I tow a 500kg camper from time to time.
Thankfully I have a lock up 3rd on the auto - that really helps.
    Run 31's
Still struggles on the long inclines though.
If you tow a lot I think a tweak and the defender TC would make a drivable unit.

That's because your winch should always be wired to your primary battery What did you do with or to your Disco today

I don't know the history of mine and whether it has a tune or not, but I'm betting it doesn't. Mine goes ok I guess when not towing, but towing and inclines is not a good mix. I've recently put the original size tyres back to see if I can notice any difference in economy and so far looking at the odometer, I'd have to say that there is. The Def TC I reckon will make a nice setup. I will also look at tweaking the pump when time permits.....

Well, getting ready for around a 6000km trip to Melrose and back, so in the last few days Slow-Mo has had 5 new tyres fitted, had a good chat with the grease gun (had to replace one grease nipple on the rear driveshaft), new steering damper, general checkover for loose bits, and when I get back later this week, there's a new tie-rod end to fit (still solid, but the rubber boot is cracked) then a wheel alignment. After all that, we should just need to load up and go

    And the gods laughed!!!
Went to Toowoomba for the wheel alignment yesterday. The adjusting trunnion(?) on the tie rod is seized so now I have to drop the tie rod (which means dropping the diff guard - lovely job, that!) and try to free it up. Apparently we've got 8mm of toe-in - should be 0 - 2mm.

Oh well, I was going to check the diffs and transfer case levels, anyway

    Timing belt. (woohoo!)

.. and the car started first go! double woohoo! .. even tho the gods of overtightened bolts all conspired to put my timing out!

IP timing pin was fine, but I couldn't locate the slot on the flywheel in any way... and of course the stupid sway bar is directly underneath the drain hole anyhow!
I could(eventually) get to see the ring gear teeth at least, but no way I could find that timing pin slot. And I think the bolt I got may have been too short anyhow.(will look at fixing this before the next belt is due).

I had all this planned for quite a time leading up to physically doing the job, ie. found a timing pin and crank bolt thingy, all the parts needed, actually forgot which of the two crank seals did what, I had both outer and inner(just in case was needed). No leaks, nice and dry, etc.
Belt was in very good nic! very little black powdery stuff inside.

Only (annoying) problems I ended up with were a rounded head on the main fan belt idler pulley, and of course they're one of those impossible to find types.
Substituted 4 new M8 bolts with a couple of washers for now, till I can find 4 new bolts to fit properly.
And the harmonic balancer didn't want to go back on over the key .. easily.
Harmonic balancer rubber looked a little worse for wear(cracking), but still tight. Another thing to keep an eye on, get one ASAP(just in case), and hopefully will last the 70-ish tho klms to the next belt.
Once that comes in, I'll use it to make up a crank holding tool too. Makeshift bar I made up was a bit too jerrybuilt.

Not a hardjob to do ... made easier with tutorial blknights had posted a while back ... just back breaking, leaning over the front for hours.

I did mine with the Blknight tutorial too. (Thanks Dave). Except my first effort ended up one tooth out. Doh!
Any particular reason you're going to do it again after just 70k? I do mine at 120k - I think you may have mistaken miles for klms

Aha! OK, I thought it was 70K klms, but it's miles, so 100K+ klms sounds good!
