    Weekend

I took the Disco down the tracks on West Cape Howe on the weekend.

Everyone i spoke to beforehand said the tracks were sooo tough and everyone gets bogged... with people having to walk out and get help etc.
When i was there i had an absolute blast watching big flash expensive land cruisers and young smarty pants nissan patrol drivers getting bogged over and over again and then I would drive the exact same spot with the Disco and the 300Tdi would just putter away over every single obstacle!

I must admit that half their problem was they don't know how to drive/tyre pressures but the Disco 1's are truly great offroad with only minimal modifications.

^ Steeper than it looks in the photo, with a wheel sized hole one side at the back!

Damn, that looks like fun! Amazing what you can do, and where you can go in a D1.

What did i do to my disco today?

BROKE DOWN IN STRATFORD!! Atleast it had a pub!

Fixed a broken key in the ignition barrel and fixed a whole wiring issue a few days ago, i was so happy with myself.

Picked up a caravan for a mate last night.
Cooked the old D1 and now she be dead. Temp gauge never reached red but she is cooked none the less.
Blew 2 radiator hoses, cooked the gas lines so they are leaking gas, popped the dipstick and dumped oil everywhere.
Must have been quite a bit of heat under the bonnet.

Had a blowby issue for some time (rings no doubt) but now i got me some head gaskets to repair also.....

    YAY!!!!!

Had to tow the old girl home using my wifes jackaroo........Sad to be part of that toe i tell ya.

Had several nice guys come over to help me out. All of which were either driving discos or had previously owned them and knew my problem.
Each and every one said to me....... Yea the old discos dont like to tow in the heat do they lol.

Even had the local establishment come and tell me off for breaking down in an inappropriate place. No ticket though so cant complain. The caravan was unregistered!

Now to contemplate for a few days, do i just give up on the disco, do i rebuild the entire engine or do i put a second hand unit in there...........

A low coolant alarm and a decent temp gauge ( the LR temp gauge is Useless) would have saved you all the grief of a cooked engine
If you get another Disco or fix this one up get these fitted ASAP.
You only get one shot at life, Aim well

I know your pain. Our Disco 300Tdi cooked when the coolant overflow bottle cracked. We bought a replacement engine and had it fitted.

Thumbs up 300Tdi Fuel Injection Pump o-ring repair.

Just finished doing the in-situ Injection Pump Distributor head o-ring repair...was dripping ~ 5 secs interval. Used the Dieselgeek kit (took few weeks to get here) and tutorials from TDI Golf youtube vid and various advice from you all here. All went well. Major problem initially was a very tight flare fitting nut on the pump end #1 cyl. Hard to believe but started to round the nut!!. So stopped the job lashed out for a 6 point 17mm flare and some heat and finally got it loose. Nut didnt seem gaulled or anything nasty. Curly job this one in the garage for my eyes,....was great to finally prime it up and see it crank up (without sheering inside)!

This job pretty well followed straight up after doing the timing belt/pulleys and front crank seals. As many may relate to, getting underneath, leaning over the engine bay for hours, sometimes feel like I'm over this maintenance stuff each year. But when you consider the simplicity, cheap cost of bits for what are still super comfy capable cars to drive, will stick with the old girl for a bit longer yet.

Did a bit of a service. Oil and oil filter, air filter and fuel filter. Three main things covered for a diesel. Noticed that a 300TDI takes 7ltrs of oil. Lucky I had brought ten liters, as I had not read the Haynes manual before shopping. Was due for a oil change as by the sticker on the windscreen. Certainly quieter now.

Bought it and drove it home
Nice feeling isn`t . Have just recently done the same thing, only two weeks ago for me. Yours looks a nice clean bus for its age. I`m still getting to know mine as I am still discovering things.
