When mine died a few years ago now, I started to remove the regulator and came across 3 cross head screws.
Two came out with difficulty, one just got chopped out badly so in the end I couldn't get mine off. Whacked it back in drove around for a week just charging the batteries as needed, new alt came .. and went in.

I still have that old original to fix up one day.

ps. 15mm bolt heads are common on the 300 Tdi.
    Arthur.

All these discos are giving me a heart attack!

The tacho's been intermittent for a couple of months. The wire is secure at the alternator so figure time for a new one.
Fixed drivers door lock spring, an idler pulley bearing and rear door washer. And now chasing an engine oil leak - bit more than acceptable. Great reads on this site.

If it’s charging ok I wouldn’t change alt. Sometimes just the connection gets old. You can cut a bit of the wire and put a new clip on it, give it a clean n should be ok.

Mine is doing the same now. Even when it was wired by a sparky few years back. A landrover expert told me needed new alternator. I told him it’s brand new, just needs wiring fixed at alt end. I taught even him something new. Thanks to this website.

Wired it up and has worked until now. Might be worth putting a heat resistant wire insulation around it too.

Tacho on my petrol Disco is also wonky. But that ain`t why I am posting here. Been getting the petrol Disco ready to sell. Today I gave it a dam good clean inside, removed the rubber flares that I had fitted. One had come of due to a bush or some thing. Looks better with out them as it has standard tires and rims. Did some touch ups with the paint so tomorrow it will get a wash. Also will see about getting a better drivers seat from the wreckers as the one in it is cactus. This week I got the auto serviced and the high idle issue fixed.

Most of drivers seats at wreckers are cactus, ie seat diaphragm U/S. you might bet lucky and canabilise a passenger seat to steal the fabric from. The lumber support hole might need some sewing though.

I replaced a failed D1 seat diaphragm with a cheap 5 metre long 1" webbing tie down strap. Nice and firm and load rated too.

I seem to recall when my tacho played up some years ago my trusted Landie mechanic simply cleaned a transducer (?) sender unit attached to the auto-trans and that solved the problem

That might have fixed the speedo, the tacho isn't connected to anything other than the alternator on top of the engine.

Now I remember!! Of course you're absolutely right bee utey.

And yes I do recall that I fiddled about with the alternator spade connection at some stage - just cleaned it up with bit of emery paper - to get the tacho going again.
