My mum wrote off her hyundai a few years ago, and Dad and I fixed it back up again. It's amazing how little damage you can do to a car to rack up a decent damage bill. Anyway, because it was written off, I had to supply the insurance company with a written statement saying that the vehicle was structurally sound and repaired properly (I am a qualified panel beater). This was enough for my parents to get it re-registered.

Just buy a D2, like you said I went everywhere you went that weekend (except the big pen off course). The D2 will go further everytime, (TC and that) and the engine has more potential powerwise. Plus its easier to fit bigger tyres on the D2's, no chopping guards and that.

hahaha i didnt see you in the rear vision mirror when i went through the canyon though? :P

I think i have just found a car, haha after changing my mind 10 times tonight, i found a defender, its a 1998 model, tdi still but has a really good body shape (looks the same as the td5's, i think possibly because it was the last model before the td5?) and yeah, new bfg mud terrains, 2 inch lift, roof rack and awning, rear drawers, snorkel, winch bar etc etc, pretty much everything, engine has 300,000 clicks on it but my engine is exactly the same so if i buy my wreck i can use all my parts (mine has new head, new water pump and water pump casing - pretty much the essentials for a tdi, and alot of other things, plus i have another disco wreck with a good 300tdi in it also ) all for only 14k, which i think its pretty cheap for a defender! might offer him a bit less though because i only really have about 12k....

I'm excited! only problem is its in melbourne... but oh well road trip time i say.

Mate, your driving buddy Hendrik has a D2 as you say, you know what its capable of doing, so you know the outcome. Defender is also a good buy, but I recon you better drive one first as they are obviously very different.

However, if you love your D1 you may be able to repair it, clean it up (if you have not done so) and just keep driving it.

If its just a financial write off, you don't need to de-register the vehicle in the first place (Victoria, at least). So with the insurance money, you can repair it and keep on truckin'

I wrote off (read, i was t-boned by a young lady running a red..) my daily/track car a couple years ago. It was an '85 Nissan Bluebird, upgraded radiator and fuel tank, and literally everything in between, including a motor swap.
The crash was pretty demoralising so I sold the wreck with all the gear to a bloke in Sydney. Plus the insurance pay out, it was a decent amount of cash (of course, nothing close to what i'd spent though)
BUT, was by far the biggest mistake i made! I should've just bought a new shell and transferred everything across. Wouldv'e taken all of a month or two, and she'd be back up and running. I sure do miss that little, rusty shoebox

Anyhoo, my vote is take the write off cash from the insurers and buy it back. The buy back price should just be what it would cost them to come and tow the car to their yard/auctions whatever. (Mine was about $400)
Buy a defender, transfer across any parts/accessories from the Disco and keep on enjoying

(sorry for the life story )

After a restless night, and little sleep, i still don't know what i really want to do haha.... I like the defender and the D2 (i have found one with only 180,000km's in my fave colour (green ) 2000 model but its stock as a rock and if i bought it i wouldnt have any money to modify it accept putting on what i can from my D1,

But, i just don't think i can ruin my D1 haha i may just repair it and have some left over money for a 33' tyre upgrade.. but yeah... i really still don't know what to do!!!

Does anyone have a Tdi defender in brisbane that i could go for a ride in to get a feel for? preferably a 98 model - my dad used to have a 96 model 130 but that was back when i was still younger - it didnt last long before a guy who worked for us rolled the bloody thing haha, i learnt to drive a manual in it though :P back when i was 6!
