Thread: The ultimate solution to Td5 vibration / knocking

To soften the R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R drone replacing the engine mounts might help. In my case, owning the disco since 2004 with 50K on the clock then, it was always there but is worsening over time. Would be great if someone knew that by say, replacing the crankshaft bearings, it would fix it. But the hundreds of threads that I have been reading on the subject were never conclusive.
It might be mentioned in the long thread elsewhere but renewing crank and big end bearings did'nt cure the problem on my '99 TD5 Disco.
Neither did the installation of a new Turner engineering cilinder head.

I'll keep on reading. Hope to find the solution one day.

See I don't really think the vibration that we are feeling is solely from the engine. OK, there is no doubt that it is coming from the engine at those magical revs but it would have done that from factory. I think that somewhere along the drive train parts are becoming a little loose and amplifying the motors natural vibes.

As I've mentioned, if I remove my rear tailshaft, it all but goes away. But two shafts later and its still there. So I am fitting a third on the weekend. I'm also going to be checking the HB and replacing the gearbox mounts. Then the flex plate with the box out and the torque converter......after that, the drive shafts. Then the chassis rubbers.

I'm trying to eliminate the 2200-2500rpm Td5 Auto drone and have been working through the list of possible solutions.

In another thread a UK member posted a pdf of a LR tech bulletin which points to a major cause, and a LR $$$$ solution. Unfortunately the post is a "here you go..." with pdf attachment and it seems that it's been ignored. The VIN listed in the bulletin 1A720478 has a build date of 19/02/2001 so if you have a td5 auto built prior to that date this might be a solution.

The contents of the pdf are pasted below so the search function will return the details:

    Bulletin No: 0012

    MODEL/DERIVATIVE:
    Discovery Series II (LT)

    AFFECTED RANGE:
All Td5 Automatic derivatives up to VIN 1A 720478

    PROBLEM:
AN AUDIBLE BOOM NOISE AT APPROXIMATELY 2400 rev/min, EVIDENT IN ALL GEARS

    CAUSE:
Currently, the front propeller shaft on diesel automatic derivatives has a sliding spline joint, which has a high plunge stiffness under torque. This may allow vibration to be transmitted along the propeller shaft into the vehicle interior, which can be sensed as an audible boom at 2400 rev/min.

    ACTION:
Where a complaint of the above is confirmed, replace the front propeller shaft with a new specification propeller shaft now available from Land Rover Parts. The new propeller shaft incorporates a revised sliding joint, which uses ball bearings to reduce the sliding resistance of the propeller shaft under torque.

Refer to Workshop Manual, part number VDR100090 (6th edition), Propeller Shafts, Propeller shaft - front, repair number 47.15.02.

    PARTS INFORMATION:

    Description: Propeller shaft - front
Old part number: FTC5320 or TVB000100
    New part number: TVB000220

That's a great find and a document that I've never seen before. My first Disco had a really annoying vibration at 2200rpm and I was that put out by it that I got LRA involved. Their technical guru of the day looked at the exhaust and other things (noe of which made any difference to the vibration) but the front prop shaft never got a mention.

My current Disco (the last of the D2's built) was much better with only a very minor (and acceptable) vibration. But, at around 100K the 2200 rpm drone became more pronounced and at this stage, I'm leaning towards my left front engine mount as the culprit.

Do you know the date on this bulletin?

    Cheers,

    Franz

    Franz,

It's dated 24.04.2002. The Tech Bulletins included on the commonly available RAVE CD's seem to only cover up to 09.03.2002.

    cheers

    FINALLY!!!

...Someone with the same issues as me.

OK, I can only put it down to one thing - the hand brake assembly. I am going to find someone nearby whose doesn't vibrate and try it on mine. Am also going to check the internals.

PLEASE keep us posted on yours.....

    Cheers
    Caine

Pulling up the handbrake removes the rattle. The vibration remains

I did this last year with my TD5.
When you remove the drum backing plate you will notice significant wear on the spring retainers and brake shoes inside the drum.
Get some new brake shoes the vibration over the years wears all the connection points particularly the backing plate where the shoes contact it.

The replacement of engine mounts was a waste of time and money as far as i was concerned, even though they appeared to have sagged (left one). replacing them made virtually no change at all.
