well believe it or not it looks like its the handbrake after all !!! what a relief. who would have thought it could make such a noise... i didnt.

and this would explain why sometimes it would do it when stationary and others times not - i didnt always have the hand brake on !

so yeah, when i pull the brake up a little while its happening it stops it.

so i just took off the rear propshaft and the handbrake drum and put the transfer case into Diff-Lock with a 10mm spanner.

so i can go for drive and bit by bit take the handbrake apart till i find what part is rattling...

thanks so much for the help this has probably saved me hundreds of dollars that would have been spent in labour at the mechanic...

im also really relieved it's nothing more serious as we only just upgraded to this model from an old '91 d1 and was getting worried...

so i just got back from a drive without the hand brake drum and rear prop shaft and it was the quietest ive ever heard it. not a peep. total silence.

so i guess it must be the drum or the shoes ??

do you know what it ended up being in your case or haven't you found out yet ?

good to see you fixed it but this thread is about the vibration common in Td5s and not a rattle. They are very different.

Try replacing the pins and springs that retain the shoes to the backing plate. I have used socket head cap screws (so you can get in there and hold it) large washer on back and then the spring as normal, another large washer and nut.

The park brake rattle is caused by the Td5 vibration, so it is related. I was prepping the D2 for its bi-annual MOT here in Norway and checked the bolts from the drive/flex plate to torque converter again, but they were tight. Reading on other forums makes me think it might be the big end bearings aka crankshaft bearings that might need replacement?

ill agree with this, as now my rattle is fixed , there is still a noticible vibration at the same rpm, which i would think would have led to the brake shoe wear from excessive vibration.
