Agree, it is a harmonic. I have read a number of threads on the US forums were people have started to replace the front and rear output shaft bearings. The constant vibration and normal load make these wear out after time and they might contribute in the vibes and destroying the UJ's front and rear. It only is a 1,5 hour job to replace each without dismantling the LT230 too much. Will do this and report.

Just replaced the Torsional Vibration damper. Lucky to have some Land Rover tools it wasn't too difficult and the nut wasn't too tight either. The new crank shaft seal is an absolute must to replace at the same time as the old TV damper was grooved and as Urban Panzer found out will cause the old seal to leak rather sooner than later. A time staking process to get the new seal in as their is not much space to knock it in.

Having the opportunity I ran the engine without the belt on, and even without the TV damper, vibration still there.

With new TV damper in place I now have a rattle in idle at 700 rpm. (I guess the park brake shoes or joint in the rear prop shaft). Around 2400 vibes are still there.
There is a metallic knocking or ticking when laying under the car with engine in idle. Can only think of Torque Converter, what else has enough mass to move things about? Really would love to read if someone replaced the TC and the results...

    Question td5 rattle

Ive got a vibration rattle in a TD5, 2001. It happens at a certain level of power of acceleration.

It can do it in neutral or driving (most common).

Ive tried replacing all 3 of the Exhuast line components after the turbo.

The thing that has me confused is that it doesn't do it with the middle muffler or whole exhaust removed. leading me to think it was a baffle plate in the center one. but replacing it with another used one didnt help...

ive pulled off the engine and turbo cover and checked the manifold for loose or broken bolts finding none.

i dont think there much chance the muffler i replaced from wrecker (supposedly a good one) would be stuffed as well as it sounds the same.

maybe its that by having the middle muffler in it increases the pressure in the exhaust causing the rattle.

    any ideas ??

Are you saying that you drove around with the exhaust completely off and it DIDN'T vibrate at 2300 rpm?

yes. i drove it with just the down pipe from the turbo. no such noise. put just the middle muffler back on (no tail pipe) and it started up again.

im just going to throw my issue in here just incase some one has the same or had it...

driving along, between 95-100km/h i get a slight vibration. it usually happens when accelerating through that speed when when i reach that speed, and stay there for a while it seems to dissapear. i cant figure out if it happens in neutral or not because i cant maintain the speed. there is no vibration after 100km/h.

the only other thing, is the engine has a load roar at 3000rpm but i never usually take it up that high unless im pulling myself out of the mud.

i cant really think of any other way to explain it, but if you have questions or solutions.... feel free to jump on in

There is a isolator plate above the center section. If you push it up you might find it is loose. With a thick washer(s) between bottom plate and this isolator plate you can secure it again. Since this plate is right above the center section it may be the cause of the metallic rattle.
