I see lots of transmission vibrations coming from suspension lifts, but not when in neutral,
with regard to the tranny the only thing with enough rotary mass to cause a vibration is the converter,
we see lots of both cracked flexplates on TD5's and also the pressed steel flange thats welded to the converter is prone to cracking,
but I doubt everyone that hears this noise has a cracked converter so I am inclined to think it a bit of both, ie a light harmonic may be a common engine charactaristic but a lond clanking from the bellhousing area may indicate a cracked flexplate or cracked converter flange,
