Check your transmission brake drum/shoes for rattle - they contribute a lot and the parking brake lever works as an antenna. See if it helps pulling the lever 1 or 2 clicks. I also found one of the oil cooler pipes being loose - tha clamp that holds both pipes in place was loose. Helped as well.

I recently did a bit of an overhaul of my TD5.
As part of it, I changed the front engine mounts, and a custom exhaust on. I had the down pipe solid, and then the flex put in just after the "bend" as it starts to travel rearward.
I also changed to a VNT turbo.
The vibration is now gone. I cant feel it. In fact, it had been a while off the road, and I was driving it around for a week until i noticed there was no vibration. I dont know which of the above was the major contributor, but, my engine mounts were collapsed, and the flex was bound to have contributed as well.

Following Urban Panzer's advice: www.discovery2.co.uk / Crankshaft pulley* / TV damper replacement as mine too does squeek as the engine stops, will replace the TV damper at the next occasion. Also found play on the rear propshaft UJ, so will replace that too. I can imagine the UJ wears out so soon having to cope with the vibes all of the time!
What I would love to hear is feedback from other readers about the actual vibration that can be felt around 2500 with gear in neutral on either propshaft. Ask the wife or a friend to sit in the D2 with autobox and have her/him revv the Td5 up to around 2500 rpm. I held the rear propshaft right after the parking brake. It buzzez/vibrates like hell. Had a friend with a 300Tdi Defender visiting yesterday, compared his propshaft vibes with mine - in the 300TDI occasion it is totally motionless with the friendly TDi tap that can be felt. Nothing like humming and buzzing like an angry wasp!

Martin, I seriously think you should sell and buy a V8. No vibe issues with the 8. I really do not think one can remove what is an inherent trait of the motor.
Yup....it is a TD5 harmonic...no doubt about it. With a few more km, I can still feel a change at the 2300-25oomark. My new mounts and the flex have just smoothed them out. Im beyond worrying about it now.
