After placing a brand new centring bearing alone over the input shaft of the diff I am convinced it is the cheap and nasty Taiwanese crappy quality centring bearing. Will buy a Genuine from LR on Monday and fit it up.

It is not the donut and very unlikely to be the shaft itself.

In the last 6000km, I have had to replace my engine and gearbox mounts, and now the viscous fan hub assy, and the harmonic balancer.

I dont have a detectable vibration anymore.

My harmonic balancer disintergrated this week:

    two quick questions:

#1 - what tools do i need apart from socket set to remove transfer case output bearing ?

#2 - Hamish, was there one thing in particular that replacing helped the most ?

the engine mounts gave a significant reduction, but still detectible.... with the harmonic balancer done, cant feel them at all

No special tools needed to change the output bearing. You need to remove the rear driveshaft/brake drum/back plate, output flange and harmonic damper weight. Then remove the bolts that keep the output housing in place. With some knocks of a hammer and some wood you break the seal and can pull the housing from the Transfer case. Remove the circlip that holds the bearing in place and use a press or hammer to remove the splined shaft. with the bearing. Then use press or hammer to insert new bearing and shaft. Remount everything and also renew the flange oil seal.

    Hi catch 22,

How are you going with this vibration? I have just bought a series 2 disco on the weekend which had a harsh vibration at 2100 to 2400 rpm. Both eng mounts were sagged as it vibrated at idle too. I replaced them with genuine ones today and the idle is now smooth. The vibration is still very noticeable at 2200 though.
It vibrates in all gears while driving, sitting still in park or neutral all at 2200 to 2400 rpm. It vibrates on over run at this rpm too. While driving at 90 to 105 kmhr it will vibrate so I put it in neutral the vibration disappears. I rev the eng to 2200 while still in neutral and the vibrations back. Either side it's fairly smooth but at 2200 rpm it's very annoying. I'm tempted to replace the harmonic balancer even if theres no play. But at a $1000 dollars it's a large gamble.
    Any more ideas?
    Cheers. Michael.

    g'day Michael,

I am waiting on my micrometre to arrive so I can check all of the shafts, especially the rear, perfectly. I have three rear shafts here that I have to choose from. I have also got my 36mm fan tool so I can properly check the harmonic balancer (very hard to check the HB with the fan in the way).

This issue has completely turned me off the Disco and I no longer enjoy driving it. In fact, there is a very high chance its going to get sold as I'm sick of maintaining cars. Venting over...

Before you start throwing money at the problem, seriously consider whether its all worth it. In my case, it certainly hasn't been. I should have sold immediately and bought an older Rangie Classic V8.

I am keen, however, to hear how it goes after you replace the harmonic balancer.

    Cheers

Ok so today i removed the exhaust and no change. I then removed the cooling fan and the front of the vibration dampener on the harmonic balancer (whick looks to be in good condition) and no change. I removed the serpentine belt and guess what no change.
Fortunately i dont need to take the car off the hoist to test each part removal as it vibrates sitting still and just reving the eng and holding it between 2200 and 2350 rpm.
I started removing the transmission this arvo to check the flex plate and torque converter. Looking through the inspection hole in the bell housing the converter to flex plate bolts look fine but i cant see the crank to flex platebolts due to the spacer.
once i have removed it tomorrow if there is no visual problems like cracking or a weight missing from the converter i will have them tested for balance. I cant remember if the starter is bolted to the bellhousing only or if its bolted to the block. If its bolted to the block ill run the motor without the converter attatched.
Ill let you know tomorrow night how the flex plate and t/c looked. Fingers crossed it will be the flex plate.
