Gentlemen,, I have merged the two TD5 vibration posts,, it was too good a TGO opportunity to pass up,, it may read a bit funny, but will be a better record.

    about $850au delivered.

Fitting including oils should be about a grand. It's a 6 to 7 hour job.

...still cheaper than me buying a D3

On a side note the new genuine flex plate installed during the TC work gave up after a few months (remap guilty?) & ended up replacing it with (2) custom made steel flex plates (back to back for increased flexibility yet able to retain shape).

Matt, I would love some help on those custom flex plates. I've made up the V8 TC side and now need a better flex plate. What material to use & thickness, also you mention "back to back" what exactly do you mean by this?

    Thanks

    Jakes,

Regrettably was not physically involved thus have no pictures to show on this one...

About 2 months after the up rated TC was installed the flex plate failed by cracking all around the bolting circle. This also fubared the hydraulic pump so had to take the vehicle to an automatic transmission specialist to have the box rebuilt (way beyond my league). The standard flex plate was replaced by (2) 5/16" (~3 mm) 4140 steel plates. According to the workshop guy, plate steel is prone to have slightly more flexibility on one direction than the other depending on the manufacturing process. The way to overcome this is to install them backside to backside so that any tendency to deform in a specific direction is then cancelled. Albeit this makes some sense to me it may well be a load of bull... At any rate that's what I ended up with and so far so good.

28 pages of posts, after merge, a long time to read!

But it was well worth it. Wife wondered where my morning went but I took away some great points for my Disco td5 auto:
    1. Fix the handbrake as it's my main rattle culprit right now
    2. Budget for Ashcroft TC and stronger flex plate
    3. Check the TCase output shaft next time I"m in there
    4. Use Ashcroft CDL kit instead of fitting D1 parts
There is hope for rattling/vibrating Disco td5s! Thanks to all who posted with so much helpful info.

Well, got round to getting the disco to the mechanic to fit te new bigger tc and must, not really impressed.

It may have made the vibes a little less but I think that is mostly due to new gear oil, but it has thrown out the gear changes and it certainly doesn't change at lower revs. It only changes faster when your giving it a little more than usual. And it is very reluctant to get In to fourth. I used to be able to get In to fourth at 60kph but now it seems it likes staying in third to just on 80.

They are my first impressions with my drive home so more driving is required.

But so far, certainly not an upgrade I'd recommend whether you're trying solve vibration issues or not.
