You will need a key and fob because of the alarm / immobiliser.

A used key is easy enough to pick up, then all you need is someone with Nanocom to program it for you.......offcourse it will also do a new key as can any dealer program one for you (new only)

There are heaps of threads on the D2 forum. Do a search.

Basically there are two frequency available for the D2's. One 315Mhz and other is 433 Mhz. Your's will most likley be a 315 Mhz.

Dealers typically sell them for $330 or something similiar to this which obviously has tidy mark-up (obvioulsy the overhead component to cover all their corporate lunches).

You can get them from overseas from anywhere between $85 - $160. Then the dealer charges $70 to program although if you know someone with a nanocom maybe a slab.

From my personnel experience I have found it hard to date to get the right key although I should have it finalised within a week or so as I have new in the mail from the UK( I could send it back and forth about 6 times before costing the same to buy in Australia. There are actually four keys available. Your part number should be CWE100700KIT. (There is also a 680, 690 & I think a 710).

By the way if this next key I get is the right one then some advice I have received prior to now on this forum will be wrong. I'll post the results.

As said above do a search, lots of info on D2 keys.

One thing to note about the above advice is that the early D2's used a different frequency alarm to later ones. The VIN will tell a dealer or anyone with MicroCAT what frequency fob is required.

Locksmith can cut the key based on the lock number. Again, dealer can get this from the VIN.

Yes it has an immobiliser and the key fob needs to be programmed in to the vehicle. Any new fob will come with 2 barcodes and these are used to initialise and identify the new fob.

I just purchased a key from the USA for twenty bucks second hand however the condition of it is like new so pretty happy with it as I only purchased it for the case as opposed the electric board inside (beat's paying $35 for the polmex franga).

Anyhow cracked it open and it actually tells you the frequency inside unlike the one I currently have for the car.

Also Microcat is very hit and miss with correct detail so I would not rely on that database telling you right stuff about your car.

When I initially started making enquiries to the dealer and other reputable Land Rover businesses they both said they try both frequencies when selling a replacement.

I'm inclined to believe getting the right key is a lucky dip.

Also you don't need a barcode. You just need the 6 numbers on the sticker inside the fob (That's a fact jack).

Sorry all I did do a search but must'nt have typed in the right thing as I could'nt find what I wanted. I found a blank one on fleabay for $7.50 yep I thought it was too good to be true. Thanks all for the replies.

Hi there. I've just been going through the same process. Take a look at your chassis number, if you have an "XA" in the middle of it then you will have a 315mhz frequency. I confirmed this with MLR today.
This frequency ran on D2's up until about 2000, where it then shiftedto 433mhz and I think later models went onto something around the 700mhz mark.

You'll be best off buying a blank key and fob combined frm
eBay. You can confirm with the seller what frequency you need as they should have all frequencies available. I just bought a 315mhz blank key and fob today for $85.
I also bought 2 blank key blades (separate to the combined key and fob) and two spare fob cases (one as a replacement for the current fob with no blade key and one as a spare)
The blank key blades were $30 for two and the spare fob cases were around $45 for two.
Much cheaper than buying through a dealer.

Now, I'm yet to find out whether there will be any issues with the programming of the new blank key and fob, but if the seller sends a 315mhz fob as he said he would then I don't foresee any issues.

It's a shame that the immobiliser is built into the fob in such a way. The keys are easy to brake and if the battery goes flat, you're stuck.
It will be worthwhile fndng your EKA code... This code is a sequence of key turns performed in the drivers door that will enable you to start the car in the instance that the immobiliser fob is not working. You'll need to contact land rover for the unique sequence, also have a read through your manual for more info about the AKA code.

I haven't got any contact numbers as it was all through eBay. I'll track down the links that I found and pass them along to you as a reference.
