New Disco 2 owner with a few questions

I have just bought a new 1999 Disco 2 V8 and I have a few questions for the experienced people in here:

    1. Hill Descent Control... I tried the Hill Descent Control and I am not sure if it is working or not. I read in the manual that you must have it in 1st gear (I have automatic transmission) for it to work. When I push the HDC switch there is a green flashing light (HDC symbol) on the dash and there is a continuous ding-ding-ding sound. Is this normal? I have tried it down a few steep hills but I haven't noticed any braking. Is the HDC broken or am I missing something? I don't have to be in low range right?

    2. Tyre pressure... Inside the front door it says that the tyre pressure should be 28 PSI in the front tyres and 46 PSI in the rear. This seems quite strange to me. The difference is huge and wouldn't the car be heavier in the front?

    3. Cruise control... The cruise control is not very responsive compared to our Mitsubishi lancer. If you activate the cruise control at 100 km/h and take your foot off the accelerator the speed drops to 90-95 km/h before it kicks in and slowly creeps up to just under 100 km/h. Usually this takes 10-15 seconds. Is this normal or does mine have a problem?

That's all for now but I will probably run in to more mysteries soon.

    Hi and welcome,

It's worth scanning the first two or three pages of the forum subsection before posting as some of these questions come up very frequently. You can also use the "Search AULRO.com only" box at the bottom of the page to search for previous threads. The forum has been going for over 10 years and it's extremely unlikely your question is going to be new and unique so someone will have posted it before.

The other bit of advice, is to grab the owners handbook out of the car and spend an hour or two reading through it. This will save you a lot of grief and will help you better understand how LR intend features to work.

    On to the questions.

    1. HDC must be in low range to function.
    See: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-2/162832-hdc.html

    2. 46psi rear pressure is for full load on the rear axle. 38psi is the "general purpose" inflation figure which will be suitable for up to 5 passengers + luggage. Even at kerb weight the D2 is slightly heavier in the rear.

    3. Not sure if this is a problem with the CC. On the Td5 which uses a different system the speed does tend to sag slightly depending on how you are driving when you engage CC.

    cheers
    Paul

I would say it's not normal. The hose which maintains the pressure for cruise control maybe buggered and if so will only get worse.

Mine generally kicks in straight away and if anything over accelerates a tad (very slightly). I have a V8 as well.

    Regards
    Andrew

Ok, I found the following post on how to replace the CC hose: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/961637-post15.html

I located the vacuum pump and diaphragm and checked the hose between them. The hose seems to be in good condition like it may have been replaced previously. Other hoses coming out of the vacuum pump seem older. On the hose itself it says "Windscreen washer/vacuum hose 5mm SAE J1037". Is this the correct size and type of hose? It seems kind of thin and flimsy.

Hi and welcome. Its the alloy engine that makes the front end so light. The wear as a lot of weight including the fuel tank, passengers, load over the rear axle - ie groceries, spare wheel etc.

    Cheers
