    Do you even lift?

    so AULRO.
i'm considering a 50mm (that's 2" in the ond money) lift on the mandrover to help account for the bullbar on the front and the sag in the aging springs, to improve my approach/break over/departure angles since i scrape when tackling kerbs in the city let alone rocks in the bush, and thirdly to allow for fitment of better tyres.

but, since i'm a cheap ass i want to know the benefits of a full suspension kit ($1k) vs spacers ($250)
as far as i can tell, the full kit only benefits you if you're doing more serious offroading or have major sagginess issues or your springs have sagged.

    what should i do?

    Cheers,
    Matt

As far as I am aware from a legal standpoint spacers for springs are not on. If your suspension is sagged to the extent you say a kit is the go.50mm+ springs will not give you 50mm of lift generally. depending on acccessorios. A new set of coils and shocks will improve ride and handling, help your lights stay on the road when towing and in general is the much preferred option. Go with good name stuff though like dobinsins or kings etc.
Do a search and you will find heaps of threads about pros and cons of various setups.
    Cheers Scott

If your springs have sagged enough that you are clipping things in the city - Get new springs!

Also, spacers will induce coil bind as the original coil still has the same amount of metal and can compress and become "solid" (no gaps between windings) breaking chassis mounts etc.

    You'll also want longer shocks.

The old saying - do it right, do it once... Rings true...

I can see where your coming from with your prices. But they dont really tell the full story.
The full kit will include 4 coils and 4 shocks (Which I will assume are valved to suit).
The spacer kit will consist of 4 plastic or metal spacers.

With the spacers all you are doing is spacing the coil. Which as mentioned will induce bind and the coil will bottom out on itself. But the worse bit is you now have a 50mm lift (ok more likely 30mm with your saggaed coils ontop). But you now have very little down travel available with your standard shocks.
I have temporally fitted a 50mm lift to me disco. And the shocks top out all the time and that's on road.

well as far as i can tell the spacers i'm looking at (terrafirma) actually bolt to the axle below the entire spring assembly, so the compression of the spring isn't affected (i'm given to understand that the poly ones actually go in between the winds of the coil - this seems like a bad idea)

link: Terrafirma Spring spacers | Suspension - Hardware Accessories for Land Rover Vehicles

tf517 and tf525 would be what i'd use.

anyway, insofar as i can tell the only benefit that full suspension revamp will give is increased travel in the suspension. great for flexing, but probably not neccesary for what i have in mind.

oh, for the record i'm actually not sure if the stock springs have sagged or not (any idea how i could check this?) but i assume it would have due to the car's age and lifestyle of farm related towing

cheers for the help guys, keep it comming.

How do you figure that works any different.

Spring is mounted between 2 surfaces..

    1 fixed, 1 dynamic.

The gap is currently from the spring perch to the upper mount and the minimum is when the axle is on the bump stop.

Spacing the spring higher above the axle - either underneath the spring or the mount means the spring can now coil bind under compression.

Snapping or cracking spring mounts, bending axles (if the bump compression is hard enough).

So how much are these mounts?

A pair of coils is only $135.00

but wouldn't the range of flex required to make the coils bind be the same as stock?
forgive me. electronics is my forte, not suspension.

    cheers,

Range or arc will remain constant.

But effective length of spring will increase.

    Attachment 66402

So you will try to compress something (spring) into a gap which is now:

Original gap - height of spacer = remaining space.

    Hope that helps...

And better handling, a much nicer ride, more stability, etc
Forget the spacers, like everyone said...do it once, do it right, you'll be glad ya did.
