Lack of maintenance for sure, but the pulsing issue that a trans' behind a 4BD1 experiences isn't an issue with the Td5. It's always on an overlapping power stroke, the the ECU cylinder balancing pretty much smooths out any remaining pulsing. Compared to lots of other oilers I've driven (4cyl) the Td5 is much smoother. Smoother than the 4JJ1TC in my D-Max!

Yes, 3rd in the 4HP22 is 1:1 so it's the strongest gear, but seems that lots of people are towing in 4th with this box without any major issues (flat open roads for 4th gear)

I guess if your not pushing more HP or torque through the box than it was designed for you shouldn't have too many worries ... Dropping to 3rd and letting the TC lockup for anything other than flat open roads ... Rather than trying to squeeze more HP & torque through the torque converter lockup clutch in 4th gear at much lower engine rpm. I'm only running the std Td5 sized torque converter.

The issue I'm trying to work around is because my tyres are 6% oversize, when shifting up to 4th and letting the TC lockup the engine revs drop to a point where the Td5 is "off song" ... More ponies are needed at the lower engine rpm's ... The 4JJ1TC in my D-Max does this extremely well at low rpm but it runs a VNT turbo ... Haven't towed the camper with the D-Max yet but I'd expect it to cope better than I do with the Td5 at the moment (but frankly the D-Max is not a comfortable touring vehicle like the D2a is !)

Sorry if its off topic but as I suspected the 8 speed has only 4 ratios and they mix and match.
    Explanation here

I noted that efficiency was highest in 6th, so it appears that this is really third and direct if you get the drift.

Pretty amazing what they can do now.

Now if only we could put an 8 speed in a D2.

Td5 may be smooth but consider that gearboxes and the thrust washers in the transfer case last about half as long behind a td5 than a tdi or V8 say.
    Anyway. Have fun towing

Muppet...in _your_ Td5 they should be lasting at least TWICE as long as a Tdi or V8 !!!

So this is my oil cooler, fitted by the previous owner. I think it's far too big and blocks too much air to my radiator. What air does get past is heated. I plan to move it to and place it horizontal under the battery. I'll have to replace some of the plastic inner guard with stainless so it's well protected. FYI while towing my box doesn't get over 70 degrees but the engine will go to 100 degrees where I back off to keep the engine cool.

    Happy Days.

Thanks for the pic' Joel! I've got a cooler and lt230 sump on the way. As far as too big ...maybe, maybe not, and I can see the logic in keeping the cooler partly in front of the thermo fan ... any slow speed offroad towing will heat up the auto pretty quickly, and this gives you the option of allowing the fan to help remove some of the heat when the normal airflow is very low.

Pic's of the cooler under the battery please when it happens !!

    Cheers

Well, we hit the road today for 3 weeks touring ... Replaced the MAF, fitted a decat pipe and transmission cooler and towing is now no longer painful .... Except for the big steep uphill grades ... To be expected!

The slippery torque converter is a bit of a ****er, especially while trying to get up to speed towing 1.5T but get it to lockup 3rd and it's sweet as a nut. Get to 85, slip it into D and encourage lockup, and we cruise along comfortably at 90-95 (2000/2100rpm) with more being achievable ... 100 at 2200rpm and she just keeps wanting to go ... and at around 75 in 4th she'll still stay locked up and gently accelerate away as long as your not aggressive on the loud pedal. MAF, decat and 19psi boost on the Nanocom with the boot in on the long uphill grades and my faith has been restored

Knocked out around 360km today and it wasn't painful .. .. Even managed to overtake a few cars as well ... Which put a big grin on my dial.

Diesel heaters on in the Kamper and I'm about to settle in ... 18.5 deg in the Kamper and just dipped below 4.5 deg outside ... happy wife !!!!!!
