Here's one from left field for 'ya!
Try the central vent flaps .. deep within the vents themselves.
You could try to slide a narrow tube of some type through the vent grille as it is .. something like a vacuum/boost type tube .. anything flexible but solid enough to put pressure on the vent flap deep within.
My 300 Tdi D1's LHS central vent flap vibrates at 1750RPM .. without fail. load or no load on the engine, at 1750RPM it has an annoying(infuriating) metallic zizzing rattle.
At least that was the handy annoyance about it, is that I could locate it whilst just holding the engine at 1750 in my driveway.
The other annoying zizzing rattle I get is the empty passengers seat .. that one comes in at 2050RPM and I can't locate what is loose, as it has to be on the move too.
But for that dash rattle, check your vent flaps.
What worked temporarily was a couple of rubber o-rings on the shaft sides as the shaft that the flap pivots on is what causes my rattle. I had it sorted for a few months but it's back now.
To stop the rattle, it just needs the barest of pressure on the flap, or something between the flap and the inner ducting. I'm going to pull it apart again one day soon and stick some foam/rubber on the duct so that the vent flap rests on that instead of the duct.
Major problem is access .. you need something long and thin to get in there.
Hopefully it's something as simple as that for 'ya.
