Hi There,
Yeap tis a bit of a project. Appreciate all the suggestions, and yes this would add to the budget considerably. I'm going to rebuild the gearbox and do the head for now, plus take the sump off and have a look around in there. Rear main is on the list. Carrying out all the suggestions I believe would add up to more than I paid for ole Red Dog and some I suspect. Doing the head could well cover the initial outlay actually.
Got the transfer case and the gearbox off today, first time I've used an engine hoist under the vehicle. The clutch drive plate is immaculate as is the flywheel, the fingers on the pressure plate show the klms, plus the slave cylinder rod that looks very second hand.
Turning the gearbox I sense all is not well within those cast iron walls, definitely feels a bit "ruff" (in keeping with the Red Dog theme).
I agree getting things apart now this has been looked after very well by the previous owner. He did all the servicing from 200k onwards.
Rear axel is leaking a bit, something else to add to the list. Hand Brake looks fine.
Now to strip the gearbox............ no going back now.
Well I need to order my bixenon projectors and pull the other light apart and then wire them all up and then take at the front of the disco with a grinder, all while working around a 10/4 work roster so...
A little while :p

Drove 1400kms over 2 days- Townsville to Brisbane without incident. Average fuel economy was just over 10l per 100km.
Removed middle muffler with straight pipe.
