'My' D2 got a service yesterday.
Got the service it was supposed to get a few days back which was cut short due to discovery of a new issue, being the alternator bracket being broken.
Found a S/H one, drove up to buy it, drove home ... fitted, car started and driven into the shed for it's service [thumbsupbig]
Bro was keen to test drive "his" [bigrolf] D2 now that it's been tightened up a little, he's happy with the way it drives now and no steering shakes(very mild).
I changed the steering damper, as I found that every now and then you'd get a very mild steering wobble at various medium/low speeds.
Ball joints are new, track rods/tie rods .. etc. Bro reckons we did panhard bushes, but I can't recall doing them.
For all intents and purposes the majority of the steering is pretty much new.
Old damper did have an initial oil surge/splutter when tested for condition, but once pumped it seemed to come good, no weak spots. New one got fitted anyhow.
The problem with this really mild steering wobble is low speeds. A few days back on a drive hit 130 in a few spots, bends, downhill, uphill, bumpy bits .. couldn't get any shakes, wobbles .. nuth'n from steering wheel.
Car drives nicely.
But at about 70-80 every now and then(ie. not all the time), it produces a very slight shaky wobble in the steering wheel. And it is only the wheel, not the body.
Next trick will be to give the stg box a bit of an adjustment, but will need the bro back for this one.
Yeah, that was another thought, but brother reckons wheels were aligned and balanced not too long ago .. but for sure will have to get them checked again.
Took it for a spin myself today and stg damper made a big difference, so far I haven't yet felt the wheel wobble, did about 80klm around town.
But return to centre is a couple of orders of magnitude better than with the old (terrafirma) damper.
I used to pull out of my drive, sharp turn(full lock) onto street, and I used to have to begin the correction to straight before it'd self straighten up.
My D1 has(had!) a much stronger return to centre steering.
It always annoyed me the way it wouldn't return to centre.
Just a cheapo Britpart stg damper, steers more like a new one now.
Tyre rotation and front brake reline. After the million dollar ACE hose I decided to replace the pads even though there was two or three trips to town left in them.

You definitely got your $ worth out of those pads Ian.
BTW, is a brake recline the opposite of a brake incline? [emoji848]
Or are we straying onto a slippery slope? [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]
[Edit] ooh sneaky, you edited it!
After forking out five hundred bucks for an ACE hose, I thought I've never seen a post regarding the ludicrous cost, so I googled Land Rover ACE hose and up poped an exploded diagram, from BOR.
They sell a replacement hose with fittings, for $240. I'll bet I could have got one from Roverlord, but I'm not going to ask. [bawl]
the cost of the hose is the cheap bit,, when I got mine done the standard fitting technique was to remove the car from the hose....
After a long time of service, I have no idea if they were replaced before me, today the gear gaiters get replaced by a new set in a 2-tone Full Grain Dark Green genuine Italy leather.
It took about total 4hrs from all activities to complete the task (included selecting and buying leather) and it was worth that I could make it looks just like it supposed to be.
Expect to last several years as the new leather is thicker than the old one. :)
