Yeah, I used to be the same.
But many years ago I stopped 'priming' filters on all my cars and they never ever gave trouble ... other than what usual wear issues they had/have.
eg. Isuzu 3.2 V6, while an awesome engine, suffers from valve seat wear .. nothing to do with oil changes.

Actual reason I stopped doing it is that I noticed many newer vehicles had oil filter positioning that were not 'upright' so to speak. They were angled in some way(eg. RV8 has always been set at about 45° angle, so filling it is impossible before fitment.
Many engines have oil filters fitted at 90° to the block, again totally impossible to have any oil in it at all before fitment.
IIRC too, I've seen videos, and/or images of engines with inverted spin on filters too(never done one myself).

So I reasoned that the oil in the filter probably didn't really help all that much anyhow, and more importantly would be how much, and quickly, the oil drains back into the oil pump on refilling.

In my Tdi, I have an oil pressure gauge fitted, and along with the oil light on the dash... and not filling filter at all for an oil change, I've never seen any length of time taken to build up pressure or the oil light to stay on. (ie. a second or so).

So I haven't worried about it for years now.

With onebobs' filter install, my question is more about oil draining back, how long would it take(approx) and is there any messy spillage on filter removal.

Bold statement coming from a LR owner!

Yes, my priming of filters comes from 50 years of habit. Modern engines have far tighter tolerances than the old ones I started on, and modern oils are light years ahead. However, the first car I owned 'long term' was an MGB, with the venerable BMC "B Series" engine. Good luck priming the filter on one of those! So, I haven't always primed. ( My B series was one of the early, three main bearing ones )

I still prime when I can, but I gave up on the TD5. It's so awkward most of the oil would wind up on the surroundings.

Inverting the position of the remote filter would prevent a fair bit of the "drain back" though. I like the idea of using a larger filter, Z9 was the example given and they are everywhere given that every I6 Falcon up to the BF ( I think...) used them.

I'm going to investigate the idea further.

Only some filters have a check valve to prevent drain back while stopped. Dependant upon application.

Unfortunately I do not have a qualified answer for you just right now because my D2 is “laid up” whilst I work thru an extensive list of repairs, parts replacements, upgrades and 2 or 3 practical modifications one of which is the remote filter install, which we are concentrating on at the moment.
Already we are faced with a rethink re the routing, length, and composition of the feed and return oil lines. All will be shared…

    350,000 report

Been doing some bigger km recently up and back to NE Vic to help look after my ageing parents still at home at 90.

So the D2 just ticked over 350,000 km.

Still a such a versatile tough family tourer!

The TD5 is a gem, never got hot, head never been off and sump was as clean as a whistle inside when off recently for the gasket change.

The only major work in 350,000 km was a transmission full rebuild.

So it’s staying - at least if / until the Grenadier proves itself as a possible replacement.

Off fully loaded with the oztent and 2 kayaks on the roof, camping to Mallacoota next week 😊
    Cheers

I only use genuine filters on my Td5 and with this tool I find the job not hard at all.

Oil Filter Spanner Td5 for Land Rover Defender Discovery Td5 Oil Filter Spanner DA1117

Certainly not hard enough for me to warrant going to trouble of going with a remote filter.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

    not to mention dependable!

While it wasn't me personally, but the brother had to fall back on the D2s' dependability, the other day.
He's gone off up to Vic NE too(Mitta area) for a spot.
I had my dads little Peugeot in the back repairing the heater blower with a failed resistor pack. was a bit easier than expected and got it fixed whilst bro was headed off. He sung past my place and decided to swap from dependable, to economical .. and so we unpacked the TD5, and packed it all into the Pug.

I really dunno why he'd go bush, but not take the more practical vehicle, but the pug uses less than half the TD5 does .. so kind'a sort'a made sense ... except that an hour later he called for assistance as the pug died on the freeway up there.
We got it going, gingerly drive on for 15mins or so and I followed in the TD5 ... and then he asked a bit more of the pug when it duly dies again!

We(actually he!) then spent the next 10 mins reloading all his gear back into the TD5 whilst trying to prime the diesel system in the pug, and se if she'll start again.
He was going to keep going, and I had the unenviable task of trying to bring the Pug back home ... which could have left me stranded at any time.
I drive super gingerly, and got back ok, and bro made it easily to Mitta just before dark to set himself up.

I have to rebuild and reseal Pug injectors, bro has been living it up with nice weather camped next to the Mitta river.

Lesson learned .. when you're onto a good thing, stick with it!

ps. the leaking injectors on the Pug were to be expected. Had caused problems a few months back(Aug or so) and I'm surprised that they lasted as long as they did considering the bit of a bodge job we had to do at the time(just keep it going).

Yeah, took me years to finally take the plunge .. but from looking at how it works and goes together, I really don't think it's going to be trouble at all .. making it fit.

As I've mentioned, the two issues for me are both access ... sometimes! .. sometimes they come off easily sometimes not. But also mess too, and no way to catch the spillage if it happens.
It was just that the last time it was done, we had both spillage and difficulty, and I immediately washed myself up and ordered a kit(or two)

While I'm waiting to do my install when I also do the exhaust manifold, even with the manifold still in, it doesn't look too hard to install it either.

    Agree.

It’s a once every ~6 months job and spinning it off by hand has never been a problem. If it takes more than that it was fitted incorrectly.

I’ve worked on far more unforgiving vehicles, the TD5 is a walk in the park!

Your comment around genuine is a valid one, some aftermarket units are slightly longer and that does make it more of a challenge.

If I was even tempted to fit a remote head, it certainly wouldn’t be mounted on top, I’d be plumbing it “hanging” to minimise oil spillage.

Filter tools should have a one way ratchet fitting. They are for undoing, not doing up.
