Weird 'stuff' you find under rocker covers

Pulling a 2001 D2 TD5 vehicle apart just salvaging any useful bits after the car has been "worked on by an enthusiast" who probably should have found himself a competent mechanic and left the vehicle to others.
Decided I would remove the head, and on taking off the cam rocker cover i find a large plastic clothes peg laying next to one of the injectors.
Noooooooooo, I have no idea what it might have been doing in there.

    first post.. (hope its worthy)

    TD5 D2A classic.. 215,xxx km

Had the TV snap off the HB on Saturday night..First real chance to have a look and asses the damage.. considering myself somewhat lucky at this stage.

    damage report:
HB stuffed(no play, but now no TV weight!)
    Fan smashed
    Fan shroud smashed
    Pully nicely dinged
    Radiator kissed
    Lower pipe from thermostat split.

    Pics tell a better story!

going to go with a Ross Performance HB, figure a second hand OME unit isnt worth the risk and a bit of bling on the disco never goes astray..
chasing a new radiator (just to be sure) but am considering taking the original to Natrad or the like and having it checked and repaired..Thoughts on doing this?
Will renew the crank seal while the HB is off, and a new belt also.

    Open to further suggestions!

It's called "cam pegging", it's a fairly unique mod used by those in the know, I.E. the aforementioned enthusiast.

I won't give much away, but needless to say it's only needed in the high performance ones. ( It helps keep the cam and timing chain in constant mesh over 8k rpm).

Maybe just get the cooling system pressure checked and keep an eye on the dent.
You'll get a power steering pulley from the wreckers.

Welcome and it looks like a nice clean unit. With all the front stuff off, great opportunity to do the EGR delete, check the Viscous fan and top up if required (looks like the fan is cactus though), ohh and replace as many hoses as you can especially the lower hoses, including cleaning the inlet manifold and intercooler which will be available to you with the radiator out

Cheers mate, Already have an EGR delete fitted, just left the front tank in place as one of the bolts didnt want to play.
New/Used fan is a must, this one is definetly stuffed! was going to do the thermo to Rad. hose as it copped a decent split, others dont appear to be in to bad condition. Car has been regualrly serviced by Ritters, but not since the EGR delete went on. will do a clean of the IC while tis apart. alas im doing it on a budget, otherwise id be replacing ALL hoses including the I/C ones.
Really just need to get it back on the road ASAP while keeping it reliable(LOL ) and cost effective.
Hopefully the radiator tests ok and is repairable.
Gathering all the parts together before i start the tear down. Hardest to find so far is a second hand lower shroud!

See you're in Melbourne so would be surprised if Danny at The Landy Place in Moorabbin didn't have at least one of these.

Just had a quick look to see whether I still had this one, Thermo to Rad, (changed this out due to going to electric waterpump) if I find it tomorrow, you are welcome to it.

I just knew somebody would be able to explain it to me, because it was keeping me awake wondering WHY??
I take back all the unkind thoughts I had about the previous "enthusiast" owner.
