Just removed what I had posted due re-reading what I had quoted and realised that I had made a mistake.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

Yeah I'm all over the shop with this thing, the oil cooler is the engine oil cooler that gave out.

The transmission cooler is ok but the passenger side rubber hose is letting go.

The thermostat housing is to replace the one I made up from 2 back to back magna housings to convert to top hose thermostat and simplify the cooling system hoses.

Manifold has been warped since I got car so finally getting machined.

Oil cooler housing is getting a threaded plug put in the oil passage that was feeding the oil centrifuge filter (removed ages ago and hole blocked with makeshift plate)

Have D2a intercooler to fit which then showed up the faulty trans cooler hose as I was removing the radiator/intercooler/trans cooler assembly.

And today I grabbed a commodore ve thermofan assembly I had laying around and started sizing up to cut down to single fan. My viscous fan has been wobbly for a while and might as well go electric for a suck it and see what happens trial.

Your fan is probably wobbly because the bearing behind it is crook.

If you remove the viscous fan you will still need to do the bearing, as it supports the pulley for your serpentine belt to drive the other ancillaries.

Plus do the bearing before it flogs the housing out.

The bearing is fine, pulley spins sweet and no play.

Fan made a weird racket months ago and when I popped bonnet was flopping around, thought it had come loose on the thread and quickly shut motor.

I ended up trying to weld it solid (AFTER reading about everyone elses fail on that one, hey I would have felt left out if I didn't have my matching stupid moment too) then gave up and ground off the weld blobs, removed the spring, drilled holes in the hub and put screws in which broke over time but the thing has lost the wobbles and is spinning ok now but obviously something is not right and will show itself up at an inconvenient moment.

I got the manifold back today, was a rush job as I rang them half hour before closing and they still hadn't skimmed it, promised to have it done in about an hour so picked it up at 4.30 pm. Was adequate but rushed judging by the machine marks, and really could have had 1 more run to clean it up nicely but it was good enough to do the job and I got a discount so off home I went.

Will be using the gates brand transmission cooler hose (that's what the parts shop had, no personal preference) and efi hose clamps for the left side transmission line hose fixup and will be clamping on to the quick connect fitting at the cooler end.

…. I’m working with a FORD E-fan and have got it fitting snugly onto the radiator, now just need to work out how to secure it.

Now that is a nice looking setup, with the shroud properly secured will be schmick.

I do like mechanical/viscous fans as they are simple, move lots of air, and not loading the alternator at idle with the aircon on (supplemental electric aircon fan notwithstanding).

But electric for me is going for a more 'modern' look, also less risk of major damage that would happen if the viscous one let go.

Tonight however I will start putting it back together with the viscous as I need to get on the road then I can plan the 'improvements' on the car as little piecemeal jobs that won't keep me off the road for more than a day (famous last land rover words?)

I actually want to separate the radiator mounting from the trans cooler/ intercooler units and possibly mounting the trans cooler under the body (no off roading for me I can't afford to break anything) but not sure if that's progress or just a 'want' as I can't see me fiddling with the thing once it is sorted from the years of neglect as then it will be a case of proper scheduled maintainance and just driving the thing not swearing at it.

Well it's up on the ramps today to take out front shaft as there was a tiny bit of play in the diff end uni when I had it apart installing the v8 converter and it's gotten a fraction sloppier as of checking last night after only another 300k travelled.

So now I have had my leftover pizza might have energy to do the job !

IMG_20230209_100128.jpg Got the aeroflow inline thermostat housing fitted day before yesterday after finished last flush of oil out of cooling system, bit of force needed to get hoses on as it is for 38mm but all good .

IMG_20230209_100152.jpg The VE commodore lektrik fan assy is too thick to fit as I found out so ended up putting 3 bolts all the way through the viscous fan and left it at that for now, you can see them shining on the front of the fan, well it has to have some 'bling' .

IMG_20230209_100356.jpg Also tapped and plugged the centrifuge outlet so a neater look than the blocking plate I cludged up before. Three Bond sealed threads nicely and no oil pushing past as yet (it's a land rover so must leak eventually)

Just a word of warning re "dead bolting" the VC hub.
I recently had to do same on the Tdi too, found that wasn't working, and of course during the holiday period where everything and everyone was closed.
So as a last resort to keep me mobile, bolted up the hub.
All good and temps back to normal .. except when not.
Started overheating (or really, heating up more than I like) .. temps gets to about mid 90's and I kind'a sorta panic, in that I slow.pull over, check all is good.
With a locked VC fan hub, it really should all be good .. so had to check if I missed something(or cooked motor)!

Looking at fan, t'was looking really wonky, like hub had collapsed or something. I went to wiggle it, and was stuck solid!

    ??

stupid thing had unscrewed itself. No worries, back on .. until the next few klms unscrewed itself again. Luckily no damage, and then I watched it .. no really possibility of it doing damage.
What caused it to unscrew itself was the action of starting motor.
Tdi turns in opposite rotation to most normal fans(that is an "undo-it" thread to do it up) .. whereas V8s and TD5s have a normal 'do-it-up' thread.
So every start, or every second start, the inertia of starting is too strong for the threads to hold the locked up hub.

As the TD5 is normal thread, there is every possibility that when you stop the motor, the inertia in the moving fan may undo the fan from its threads .. as there is no cushioning effect of the VC hub to stop this.

Not saying it WILL undo itself, just may do so.

I've done this hack to many cars over the years as a stop gap and never seen one undo itself, till the Tdi had me scratching head about it.
    Arthur.
